I had previously bought another nursing care plan book, "Sparks and Taylor's Nursing Diagnosis Reference Manual," as it was referred to me by my first clinical instructor. But, as I started creating care plans, I found it pretty uninformative with not much detail suiting what my professor's need was for our assignments. I then borrowed a nurse's care plan book that she had used for her nursing school just the previous 2 years, "Nursing Care Plans: Nursing Diagnosis and Intervention," the 6th edition of THIS book. I LOVED IT! It suited ALL my needs and provided NANDA diagnoses and definitions, as the other did not. I came on Amazon to see if it was available and saw that this new 7th edition was coming out. I had to get this new one because it would be the best of the best. And sure enough, it is! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND to nursing students doing care plans as well as to nurses who create care plans as part of their profession. There are not enough good things I can write about this book. Highly recommended. I'm spreading the word to my classmates this upcoming semester.
I love this book only because it made my careplans which use to care easy 6hrs+ now take 30m-1hr. It has helped me understand how to plan care for my patient. It has everything from the related concepts, to relevant signs and symptoms for the diagnosis, it has Assess, Assist, and Teach components in the careplan and the RATIONALS which are critical in nursing school. This is where this book is invaluable, the rationals teach you. I only wish I had bought this from day 1.
This book was required for my nursing school - BSN program. I feel the selection of books my program chose were all very informative, to the point and we used the books for the classes that required them. During nursing school most people do not know where their career will take them, there are so many options the RN has available, so building a strong foundation is essential to success in the field. Nursing books are not written to be entertaining they are for educational purpose only. This book definitely offered education. After you graduate school and chose a path then find the best reference book you can find and carry it with you until the day you retire. I always recommend the additional study guide to a book if one is available.
I am a nursing student and my school had us purchase another care plan book. The book we had to purchase was aweful and confusing. So I set out to find a book that was actually helpful. THIS WAS IT! I cannot tell you how helpful this book is. You look up the disease your patient has and it has pages of diagnoses you can use...right there is your primary and secondary diagnoses. Step 1 done. The "common expected outcome" box is your goal and type away! PIECE OF CAKE! Plus, once you are in the correct disease, the care plan interventions and rationales are tailored right to it. Literally all you have to do is put the information in the correct area of your care plan and re-type in your own words. Care plans made simple! And, by the end of doing a few patients...you actually start to understand how these things work and the patho behind all your interventions because the book explains them so well. Worth it's weight in gold. 100% on all care plans so far!
November 30, 2013: As an VERY experienced RN with an MSN, I understand how important it is to have the information at your fingertips to provide the highest quality of care to vulnerable patient populations. And when my daughter entered HER nursing program three months ago, it became evident to me that not all textbooks required by her program had what it takes to make the grade. After just one week of watching her struggle to compose a care plan for her patient, it struck me that she did not have the appropriate tools to even begin to understand the delicate details of problem-solving the simplest of tasks for her new student knowledge level. Her assigned text was so cumbersome and difficult to understand and plow through just to get to the subject matter from the pages. I decided that, since her instructors had failed to provide them with the necessary foundation (through the right textbooks) to form a strong and confident student nurse, I would go online and find a better book. NURSING CARE PLANS: DIAGNOSES, INTERVENTIONS, AND OUTCOMES, 7th Edition by Meg Gulanick is just that book! It is well organized, intuitive, user-friendly and fits the bill for new or experienced nurses. My daughter not only can quickly build a care plan with this book, but she shared it with others in her class. Her fellow students, many whom cannot afford to go out and purchase a new book, frequently borrow NURSING CARE PLANS from my daughter while in their clinicals so they can finish their assignments. This alone says all that needs to be said. My daughter has ditched using her assigned text and uses this book exclusively. It is extremely pleasing to watch as she grows in her nursing pursuit, and actually LEARNS as she puts together her care plans, knowing that I made the right choice by purchasing this book for her studies.

I was given the project of developing templates for care plans in a electronic medical record (EMR)system. I had used care plan libraries in other systems, and found the systems to be very incomplete. So, when I had this opportunity to add to a very incomplete system, I wanted to make sure nurses using this system would be able to find care plans for whatever diagnosis was identified in the EMR library. This book provided great assistance in achieving my goal in making a user friendly library for the nurses. I continue to use this book as a reference if a diagnosis has been missed, and have also directed the nurses to this book.
This book is huge and heavy ! The layout isn't as convenient as I hoped. I wanted a more portable, quick reference than this. I am very familiar with care plans, but I wanted something to help me through my RN to BSN classes. I bought it used, and mine has the name Trish written on it with sharpie 5 times. I hope Trish passed her classes.
