PreSchool-Grade 2-- This classic tale is a favorite among children; now Levinson and Byrd present a version faithful to the spirit of Andersen's but with a slightly different twist. The retelling retains the tone of the original--spare, direct, and fluid. Byrd sets the tale in a world of anthropomorphized animals, and the results are very effective. The role assigned each beast makes perfect sense: the emperor is a lion, the rascals who trick him are foxes, the chamberlain is a goat, the royal minister is a bear, and the little child who dares to say what he really sees is a kitten. Words and pictures blend nicely, with just the right amount of text on each page for sharing aloud. Well-executed watercolor washes with pen-and-ink detailing make use of cool, vibrant colors--emerald green and fuchsia dominate. Drawn in a comic but realistic style, each animal possesses a distinct and consistent personality. The scenes are rich with detail but never crammed or confusing. Most everyone knows the story of the Emperor's New Clothes but what sets this book apart from the rest is Virginia Lee Burton's whimsical illustrations. It's fun for you and your child to just sit and examine the drawomgs. There is so much going on that you can make side stories from the pictures alone. Miss Burton was a true genius of her craft.The story itself is well told and this book will be a keeper in your child's library.
Many versions exist but this is my favorite because of the illustrations (I laughed) and the reminder at the end of the book (About the story) ... "All we know is that the story of the emperor will last forever because in every man's heart is the hope that there will always be someone to speak the truth where there is hypocrisy. And because as long as there are foolish grownups in the world, there will be children who cannot be fooled."
This is a beautifully illustrated classic tale. I always loved the story as a child and was excited to share it with my children. I researched several different publications and found a few really oddly illustrated ones! I always love Virginia Lee Burton's illustrations, so this was the perfect option for us!
Get this book for the kids in your life. Do it for the child's future mental health.It's one of the earliest lessons I recieved that later became useful to me in professional life when I was trying to make sense of corporate politics. The child will enjoy the surface story now and in the future they won't feel so alone cos they'll recognise that wise storytellers have been describing this phenomenon/syndrome for centuries. Maybe it will help them to avoid the emperor's error.Get this book for the new middle manager or executive advisor in your life. It'll remind them to avoid the pitfall, and give them an analogy to use when they're trying to communicate the problem to their peers.
Nickelodean TV featured a version of this story on its' Ruby & Max cartoon series so thought I'd carry it a step further by getting the book to read to my grandson. This one has marvelous artwork and our "Max" loved looking at the pictures and hearing the story read to him. A little difficult to get the moral across but you can easily expand on the story while reading it and I think we'll read it again sometime. Enjoy reading old tales to my grandchildren that I heard when I was young. Called 4 bookstores in my area and none of them carried it. Thanks to Amazon, you can find pretty much everything you're looking for.
My husband and I have been looking for secular books to teach our son about morals and values. Although probably too long and wordy for our 3 year old, I think that has he yes older this will be a favorite. It teaches about honesty, integrity, and standing up for what you know is right.
Great story. I have been wanting to purchase a hard cover copy of The Emperor's New Clothes for a long time. This particular book is nicely put together and very attractive.
I have always loved this story; even as an adult! I compare it to many politicians these days who think we can't see their incompetence. I give it to my "political" friends, but also to my grandchildren to tell them to look into the real character of people.
