So at Castle Rock, we are in the process of creating a vision statement, or perhaps creating some stronger branding within the community. Of course, there are hundreds of books from the religious community on this topic, but instead of reading the same stuff repackaged, I always look to read for other sources to create more creativity within myself. A leader needs a wide variety of material to think outside of the box, and when you think about Starbucks, whatever you think of the coffee, but you cannot say that the company has not branded itself well. It is highly known in this culture. So wanted to read about this man that accomplished a lot. Howard Schultz grew up poor, and has done a great job leading the company. Even when he stepped away, the company started to fail, but he came back, and the company took off again. The book is really fun to read, and is insightful on the journey of growing the company. It is a great story, but there is also a lot of practical advice. You have to root your organization in values and principles because if you have to think through every choice, you are killing valuable time. I liked the chapters on growing large, and feeling small. I liked the people focused dynamics. A lot of the topics translate into the church world well. If you are looking for a light read, this is a good book, and will make you think about your church culture too.

I loved reading this book. The author wrote it with what I consider a simple yet effective storytelling rythm that captivates and inspires the reader. Mr. Schultz talks about his childhood as a poor kid from Brooklyn, and how the example of this dad, who couldn't find inspiration in his life, threw him to be entrepreneurial and never to give up.The author writes all the way from the begining, how he knew Starbucks while working at a big company, and how he left his comfortable lifestyle and salary to pursue his dream: a project he could call his own. Some of the messages this books gives are clear and direct. Some of the ones I remember are:- People connect with Starbucks because of what it stands for, not what it is.- With pride in their work, Starbucks employees are less likely to leave.- Starbucks's stores are oasis in the middle of urban chaos where one can have some minutes of relaxation with a cup of coffee.- What people call niche markets may appeal to more people that you can imagine.- Make a point to underpromise and overdeliver.- Word of mouth is more powerful than advertising.- When companies fail, is mostly because they don't invest in people.- Entrepreneurial ventures are ruined by short-term thinking.- Once you figure out what you want to do, find someone who has done it before. Many more quotes can be written, because the books pages are filled with lessons for everyone thinking about starting their own business, or improving their existing one.

For years I was not a big coffee drinker. Somehow I survived college without giving into the caffeinated demon of the dark roast. However, a year after graduate school, I found myself working for a university that had me help manage the on campus coffee shop. Quickly I learned the science and art that is espresso making. Over time I was transformed from a delicate Frappuccino drinker to a serious espresso connoisseur (also known as a coffee snob).Soon I began to critique the subtle nuance of every coffee shop I visited. Most were very consistent with being inconsistent. Depending on the barista, your latte could be delicious or terribly bitter. Only one place could give me a reliable tasty latte with great service. This is how I became very impressed with Starbucks.Eventually I learned a lot more about Starbucks as a company. I heard about its lightning fast rise to the top, the way it hires and trains its baristas, and its community involvement. The man who transformed Starbucks from a coffee wholesaler in Seattle to the name brand mega-company was none other than Howard Schultz, Starbucks Chairman and CEO.Pour Your Heart into It chronicles the history of Starbucks and how it grew into a national brand synonymous with great coffee. From the Schultz's account, you see that the success of Starbucks occurred not by well-developed strategic business planning or incredibly good luck. Starbucks rose to the top because everyone at Starbucks - from the part-time barista to the CEO - believed in the company. Each employee is passionate about working for Starbucks and Starbucks was passionate about each employee. This book is a very interesting and personal account about the rise of Starbucks. I definitely recommend this to anyone interested in running an organization with passion and authenticity.

Colored Lights: Forty Years of Words and Music, Show Biz, Collaboration, and All That Jazz An absolutely fascinating look into the hearts and minds and working habits of two men who contributed so much to the American Theater over the last half century. Fred Ebb is no longer with us, so we can be truly thankful that he and John Kander collaborated on this book while he was still alive. As a songwriter myself, I always find such memoirs interesting and valuable.

Good for Greg Lawrence for facilitating this oral history ad thinking of the right questions to get these two chatterboxes off and running, to the races! Lawrence wrote an OK biography of Jerome Robbins, and an as told to "by" Gelsey Kirkland which was good, but this book is terrific fun. The only thing is, aren't Kander and Ebb a couple? Or was that something they didn't want to talk about? Maybe they're not, who knew! But discussion of their personal lives is totally not on the menu here. Maybe after they are dead the whole story will come out. They tell some great stories here about working with Bob Fosse, maybe the best sustained account available of the great choreographer's ambitions, dreams, desires, and mania. I like the way that Liza Minnelli and Harold Prince also jump in to give their two cents here and there from the bleachers. It's a technique you often see in journalism, and here it works just fine. Liza is subject #1 of Kander and Ebb's discussions. They are always trying to make her look good, or rather to bring her natural talents to the fore. But in doing so they paint a picture of a talented actress who was thwarted by the commercial failure of THE RINK and therefore never tried to be anything but "just Liza" again, and being "just Liza" is pretty messed up what with having a mother who tried to take over her life in a drunken haze and at least one boyfriend (Martin Scorsese) who attempted to direct a whole show for her (THE ACT) via Moviola. Kander and Ebb also discuss writing for Lauren Bacall and the differences that affected WOMAN OF THE YEAR when Raquel Welch came in and replaced Bacall. It's all very illuminating and will make you laugh out loud as well. Their post mortems for their flops THE RINK and STEEL PIER, which they consider among their best shows, are not convincing, but their account of work with a sour kvetching Frank Sinatra and a controlling Barbra Streisand have the bitter ring of truth. This is not a particularly light-hearted book but I think anyone who's interested in musical theater will get a charge out of it.I wish there had been more in it about the mysterious ingenue Jill Haworth who, after a strong of movies for Otto Preminger, took the Sally Bowles part in CABARET and got crucified for it--and had a "thing" with Sal Mineo (!!!) -- and then left show business. She is one of the most intriguing personalities of the 1960s and Kander and Ebb mention her only briefly (though very sympathetically).

As the song says, start spreading the news -- this memoir in dialogue form by John Kander and Fred Ebb really is a surprising gem. I didn't expect to enjoy a book that is mainly conversation but I went through it in one sitting (on a flight from NY to LA) and didn't want it to end. These two geniuses of musical theater are totally engaging, and their breezy dialogue is often as provocative (and sometimes hilarious) as their best musicals and songs. It's like being in the same room with the two of them and having a chance to eavesdrop on their wry insights into the shows and various personalities they've worked with, including Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Lauren Bacall, Bob Fosse, Shirley McLaine, and Anthony Quinn. The anecdotes in the book, even the dishiest ones, are told with wit and intelligence, and without the usual celebrity tell-all pretensions. Kander and Ebb come across as two very different personalities as collaborators, yet both seem very earthy and wise about life and show business. Anyone who was wowed by Chicago or Cabaret will be delighted by their reminiscences. And there are some surprising revelations, like the fact that their biggest hit, "New York, New York," would never have been written if it hadn't been for Robert Deniro, who they say disapproved of their first version of the song and made them rewrite it for him. I was also surprised by the down-to-earth side of Liza Minnelli that comes across in the Introduction -- not at all like her usual media image. This book is like a little play itself, and what a great way to experience forty years of Broadway history and backstage lore. Definitely, a unique'must read' for theater lovers.

Rhis was a book I wanted. My only comment is this came from Second Run Books and took almost a month to get.John

Too Fat to Fish, by Artie Lange Anthony Bozza

From Publishers Weekly

This debut memoir from the comedian best known as Howard Stern's radio show sidekick is scrappy, funny, tumultuous and profane, just like its author. Lange, a self-proclaimed fat guy with a heroin problem, is difficult to love, but easy to like, his shaggy-dog life story full of derogatory self-awareness and cheerful vulgarity (often in the form of casual profanity and sexism). Many episodes from this life story will be familiar to Stern listeners, including the infamous "Pig Story," wherein Lange snorts cocaine while in full pig costume on the set of television's MADtv. Less familiar to fans will be a sobering account of Lange's suicide attempt and fond childhood memories of his beloved father. Lange's outrageous and horrific behavior involves prostitution, jail time and several trips to rehab; perhaps the saddest recurring theme is the frequency with which Lange thanks someone who's helped him, only to reveal that that person is no longer a part of his life. Glossing over Lange's penchant for alienating people is just one oversight that keeps this warts-and-all memoir from feeling fully honest. Still, for those with a taste for his aggressive, self-loathing brand of humor will find this volume full of compulsively readable stories. Photos. As someone who has never really listened to Howard Stern, I wasn't sure if I'd like this when so many reviews are from fans of the show.Let me just say, this is a fantastically well written book. I read a lot of celebrity memoirs, and I think this one quickly made the short list of books I'd recommend everyone read.Artie is a master storyteller. The book is a chronological tale winding through his life, with all the associated ups and downs. He comes off in equal parts as a guy you'd love to hang out with, and a guy you'd be too embarrassed to bring around your family. There are some fairly dark moments in the book, and the drug addiction is a recurring theme because it's a big part of his life. I think it's great that he wants to get past the addiction and hope it happens for him.I'm so glad I picked this up when I saw it in a promo email.

Very similar in prose and content as the other book he has authored, the name of which slips my mind at the moment. Despite several stories being retold or similar to ones heard in the other bestseller, there is enough original Artie Lange storytelling here to keep true fans entertained, and should not disappoint fan's of the Stern Show either, as his years at the hit radio show are heavily discussed throughout the book, as well as Artie's earlier life. Artie writes from a place of self-loathing and the dark, dirty and destructive humor he is known for in his Stand-up routines and radio personality are on every page in this book. Fans of Lange should not miss this book, and this would be a good time to pick it up if you haven't read it already as Lange is about to co-star in the new HBO series about life as a comedian called "Crashing". Looks promising, hope he can make a comeback. He was one of the best parts about the Stern Show when it was arguably at it's best.

This is a FUN READ about Artie's crazy life and career in comedy. His on again, off again battle with drug addiction and how it interfered with his personal life and career is eerily familiar to fans of other comic geniuses like Chris Farley and John Balushi. Artie is no Farley or Balushi, but his life's story makes for a very entertaining read! I certainly hope Artie is able to hold back his demons and avoid the sad ending that Farley and Balushi endured. I recommend this book to anyone interested in reading funny stories or learning how comedians break into show biz.

Artie has had a roller-coaster of a life and he pulls no punches even when telling many very embarrassing stories about himself. I think Artie Lange will do almost anything for a joke, even making fun of the web-site where people are taking bets when he will die (he's a heavy opiate abuser and he is very honest about that also...) All the skinny on his life doing stand-up, and his years on the Stern show, but not nearly as interesting, to me at least, as the follow-up book "Crash and burn".

Artie bares a lot in this book. It's a nostalgic look at a NJ suburban childhood. But what is SO GREAT is Artie's ability to tell a story. I was teary eyed most of the time reading it, and some of the tears were from laughter! This is a great book for anyone wanting to remember the searing agony and ecstasy of adolescence. His courageous and self-effacing honesty really impressed me. Whether it's losing his virginity, or adolescent screw-ups, the book is a page-turner. Thanks Artie for a great book.

Great read even if you are not a fan of him or the stern show. He is brutally honest bout his life and is a page turner and will make you laugh and sad in the same chapter at times. Best line from his drug dealer" you are taking to many Percocet you ever thought abou heroin it's better for you liver"

If you're a big fan of Artie Lange, you'll enjoy this book. If you have only a passing interest in him, as I do, it's only OK.The style of the 'writing' feels like a transcript of stories read into a recorder and were promptly typed up and printed. It can be difficult to read at times because the train of thought wanders away from the original point or story. I'm obviously not a stickler for grammar or syntax, but the only way that I could get through it was to hear Artie's voice in my head. The writing is a definite distraction, but definitely Artie. The stores are mostly interesting and a good profile of his life. However, for someone who has gone through so much turmoil and strife, I wouldn't call it gritty. The book seems like a cathartic exercise for him to admit a few wrong doings and apologize to some folks he's wronged. In a lot of places it feels a little shallow. Then again, it is an autobiography, and things may be that simple for Artie. It feels true and honest, but ultimately a bit flat for me.I actually think that the audio book may have been more enjoyable so that I could hear Artie tell the stories in his own voice. Ultimately, it's an interesting profile of an addict and save for the fame he's enjoyed in his life, is probably extraordinarily similar to every other addict out there.

Stand-up comic, TV/film actor, and Howard Stern Show sidekick Artie Lange offers this heartfelt, sometimes raunchy 2008 autobiography. The story is told in the same distinctive voice that Lange uses on the Stern show. There are plenty of fun moments, but also despair from the premature demise of his father and subsequent repeated struggles with drugs and alcohol. Many of the stories have already been explored at length on-air, but Lange does provide some further details on most as well as one new revelation. Perhaps the best part for Artie's fans is the sixteen pages of color photographs. Howard Stern wrote the photo-heavy forward. Co-writer Anthony Bozza has also assisted on the recent celebrity biographies of Eminem and Slash, and seems to have helped Artie assemble a coherent, readable narrative. This was a quick read but with Amazon's discount it cost less than fourteen bucks during its week of release.

Reading this book was so amazing because I actually felt like Ms. Novack was talking directly to me. Her voice in this book was understanding and kind while addressing some very tough topics. How do I start to prepare? What should I wear to an audition? Who will be there? What if I forget my lines or make a mistake? Do I stand or sit during an audition? All of these questions and many others are answered while we learn how to prepare for the entire audition process. Ms. Novack chooses various scenes to give the reader ideas about how to prepare for the many different kinds of questions which might come up. There are situations that could make an actor very uneasy while getting ready to do an audition. Ms. Novack addresses these situations and solves many of the challenging thoughts that an actor may have before an audition. The actor does not have to fret about it any longer. An example of this would be, do I use a prop or not? In this book Ms. Novack explains whether or not to use a prop and if it's not appropriate to use one, what to do instead . She addresses that issue and so very many more. I loved every page of this book. It was not at all like reading a "How To" book. Reading this book actually felt like I was like having a good friend sitting across from me in a coffee shop and explaining to me how to make my auditions really good.

This is one of the most helpful books you will find on auditioning/and acting in general. Everything you want to know is here, easy to read and easy to understand. I couldn’t recommend it more!!!

Love this book. I can’t wait until I can work with Ellen one day soon...

This book helped me feel sooo much more prepared for auditions-- I finally started getting callbacks! It made me feel like I could actually do my BEST WORK in the audition room, and show them how good an actor I am, rather than being paralyzed by my nerves. It's direct and easy to follow!

Ellen Novack’s TAMING THE CYCLOPS is like Manna from Heaven for an actor! She expertly uses her vast experience and honed technique to help the performer achieve great results in an audition. If you can’t work with her in person (which is such a treat), this book is the next best thing! Practical, clear, supportive, and extremely focused this book should absolutely be a part of any working actor’s arsenal.

Pawpaw: In Search of America’s Forgotten Fruit, by Andrew Moore

Review

"I’m always eager to read a talented writer’s first book. For one thing, it’s full of the infectious passion for the subject that usually drives someone to write it in the first place. But more than that, authors devote to such books the kind of attention usually reserved for a firstborn child―they are scrutinized and fretted over to the finest detail. Pawpaw, a heartfelt paean to a native North American tree with edible fruits, is just such a book. I have been growing pawpaws since 1970, but never realized how much I didn’t know about the tree until reading Andrew Moore’s book. A skilled storyteller, Moore delves deeply into the world of pawpaws while managing to hold the reader’s interest through detail after detail. History, folklore, biology, taxonomy, hybridization, and everything else from slave sustenance to biochemical research are blended here.”--Guy Sternberg, The American GardenerBooklist- "The pawpaw, also sometimes called the poor man’s banana, is a common fruit growing in temperate zones across the U.S., yet it is rarely seen in the produce aisles. Hoping to shed more light on this culinary mystery, as well as inspire consumers and growers to make the fruit popular again, first-time author and gardener Moore offers both an engaging history and a thorough cultivation guide to the pawpaw. According to Moore, the shrub-like, large-leafed pawpaw tree typically grows in clumps near river bottoms along a belt running from northern Missouri to southern Louisiana and east as far as the Atlantic Ocean. Although historically pawpaw was eaten by Native Americans and slaves, it probably owes its marketplace anonymity to a short shelf life and widely variable flavors. While it remains to be seen whether Moore’s well-written paean to the pawpaw will inspire increased production and distribution to grocery stores, uninitiated readers will be intrigued enough to want to sample the fruit at the first opportunity.”“Here is proof that culinary odysseys don’t always need to involve globetrotting or the pursuit of rare, exotic foodstuffs. But, then again, in his pursuit of the lowly American pawpaw, Andrew Moore reminds us that America was once considered an exotic destiny on its own, and has always had more than its fair share of culinary rarities.”--Damon Lee Fowler, author of Essentials of Southern Cooking and Beans, Greens, & Sweet Georgia Peaches“Tropical growers have many shade crops to choose from, like cacao and coffee. Here in eastern North America we have our own luscious fruit for shady places―the pawpaw. Andrew Moore’s Pawpaw tells the story of this fruit and the people working to bring it to our gardens, markets, and restaurants. It’s the story of an eastern native fruit on its way to domestication, finally earning the place in our hearts and our cuisine that it deserves.”--Eric Toensmeier, author of Paradise Lot and Perennial Vegetables"Andrew Moore has done an amazing job demystifying one of America’s most misunderstood and neglected fruits. Pawpaw deftly navigates between his own personal journey and the facts and history of the fruit, leaving readers―including chefs interested in heritage and tradition―with a true sense of how important it is to embrace this indigenous treasure."--Travis Milton, chef and co-owner of Shovel and Pick, Richmond, Virginia“This book took me on an enchanting and engaging ride through the history, folklore, and science of a neglected but magical food plant. Andrew Moore shows us, in delightful prose and a wealth of fascinating stories, the role that the under-appreciated pawpaw has played in North American culture. I was constantly surprised to learn of the quiet influence the pawpaw has had on the people and environment around it, and like the author, am hopeful that it can find its rightful place among the better-known fruits that we all love.”--Toby Hemenway, author of Gaia’s Garden and The Permaculture City“Like a gumshoe detective, Andrew Moore tracks down a mystery at once horticultural and culinary: Why is the pawpaw, America’s largest indigenous fruit, so little known? The answer, like the fruit’s beguiling taste, proves multi-layered and slippery, and after reading Moore’s engaging account, I’m ready to light out for pawpaw country myself in search of this homegrown original.”--Langdon Cook, author of The Mushroom Hunters: On the Trail of an Underground America“This book is a love song, singing the praises of a unique, delicious, and once-abundant fruit that has been sadly neglected. Andrew Moore takes us on a very personal journey investigating how and why North America's largest indigenous fruit largely disappeared, and documenting efforts to revive it. Pawpaw is a pleasure to read, and if you do you'll probably find yourself searching for and loving these delectable fruits.”--Sandor Ellix Katz, author of The Art of Fermentation“America, get ready for pawpaw mania! Andrew Moore’s book tells the definitive story of the wild fruit that is part of our nation’s heritage, and in the process the author joins the ranks of food-preservationist heroes. Prepare to be overwhelmed with longing for the sweet scent and taste of the pawpaw.”--Poppy Tooker, host of Louisiana Eats!“Pawpaw: In Search of America’s Forgotten Fruit is a fun and well-researched, informative romp through the culture and horticulture of this uncommon fruit. Uncommon, yes, but who would have imagined that there were and are quite a few other pawpaw nuts out there? If you don’t know pawpaws, you should, and you will.”--Lee Reich, PhD, author of Uncommon Fruits for Every Garden

If you're curious about the largest edible fruit native to the United States, Andrew Moore's "Pawpaw: In Search of America's Forgotten Fruit" might be the place to go. The author relates an enormous body of interesting information about the pawpaw, and he writes well. For this I give the book 5 stars. In addition to educating the reader about pawpaws, the author educates us about his personal expeditions in search of specific pawpaw trees or fruit or persons somehow associated with pawpaws, and the tales pall. Minus one half star. The litany of names of persons associated with pawpaws, no matter how tangential to the greater theme, and descriptions of their clothing and facial features reminded me of sitting in a coffee house listening to the endless wails of the evening's folk singer when eventually every song sounds like the last. Minus one and half stars.Net three stars.

Great book on Pawpaw - the only book still in print on the subject that I could find.My brother sent me some pawpaw fruit to try last year and we all enjoyed it so much I wanted to learn more about this Native American fruit.Well everything you ever wanted to know about Pawpaw is in this book. The history of Pawpaw in the US, where to buy seeds, trees, how to plant, where to plant, festivals, growers and shippers of the fruit, etc.I am hoping to get to a Pawpaw festival and possibly grow some in NJ.

Hoo! Who'd ever think someone would write a whole book about PawPaws! It's really an Adventure Story, very well written and absorbing, while also containing a lot of hard-to-find information about our "local" Wonder-Fruit. I even learned how to pollinate my PawPaw trees - I'd have never gotten fruit without reading this! PawPaw BTW is not Papaya; it's often called a "Custard Apple" and it's an apt description. Ask your local Greengrocer to get you some Cherimoyas early next year (usually Feb-May, but it varies a lot) - Cherimoyas grow in Hawaii and California. These close relatives grow further north. Many healing properties as well as being nutritious and indulgently tasty.

This book is so interesting and fun! Bought it for a gift, but after perusing it I realized I had to get my own copy. If you are interested in indigenous fruits of the south, or you remember your granny having a paw paw tree in her back yard -- get this book! Then plant a paw paw in YOUR yard, of course :)

I am really enjoying the book on paw paws and it has inspired me to track down some trees for my yard. Interested and nicely researched, interspersed with the author's travels and experiences.

This book has been an amazing read; it's makes me incredibly sad about American agriculture in its current state, but also so hopeful that we may be able to return to a sustainable permaculture to benefit the people soon. It's thoughtful, meaningful, and tells an amazing story.

very informative

THIS SUCH A GOOD BOOK, INTERESTING SUBJECT AND QUITE WELL WRITTEN. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT

Amazon.com Review

A Q&A with Wendy Guerra Question: What inspired you to write Everyone Leaves? Wendy Guerra: My parents' deaths, both in 2004, and the disappearance of a generation that is dying much sooner than its predecessors. The rediscovery of my childhood diary and the need to tell my life story through a girl in this fictitious socialist reality. I'd never known a book that spoke about life under socialism in a child's voice. In my childhood, Cuba was a place where parents had no say about whether you handled firearms at 13, or if you went to school by yourself in the countryside, or whether you aspired to university studies. Parents didn't control their children's destinies. So I decided to graft a story on this non-reality in a place that isn't what it seems, about a diaspora that every generation has had to deal with in its own way. Everyone Leaves is my exorcism from childhood and from my "inxile." Q: Your narrator, Nieve, would be roughly the same age as you are today. Do you have anything in common? WG: I used my own real diary as the spine for this novel, working in other stories in a kind of Aristotelian weave. I choose my own memories of what happened during that time. They were very tough times of silence and farewells. When I reread my diary, I decided to lower the heat a little bit, to be a little less judgmental than I'd been as a girl. Kids are usually sharper than any politician. They can tell what's going on and judge from a very honest perspective. Q: Do you still keep a personal diary? If so, does it provide content for your fiction? WG: Usually I write in my diary every day and then revise it, go over it with a more critical and literary rigor. Later, it becomes a novel. Q: Why did you decide to write about Cuba? WG: For me, what's important is that Cuba's story be told. Our lives--which have been lived in isolation, put on hold for 50 years, displaced from the markets, and incubated without capitalist references--are as complex as magic. Q: What other books would you recommend to Amazon customers who are interested in Cuban life and history? WG: No one can understand Cuba without reading Virgilio Piñera. And it's impossible to understand the sounds of Cuba without knowing the work of Nicolás Guillén.

From Booklist

The political and the personal come together—and both prove surprising—in this prize-winning novel based on the author’s diaries about growing up during and after the Cuban revolution. Translated from the Spanish, the entries (from 1978, when Nieve is seven years old, to 1990) are true to the young protagonist’s often bewildered viewpoint as she tries to sort through the adults’ mixed messages. Of course, “everyone leaves” who was part of the privileged old system but, later, so do many disappointed revolutionaries. Meanwhile, the regime is watching Nieve’s radical artist mother, who shouts at the government demonstration: “This is not what the revolution is about.” Never preachy, the commentary captures the monotony, isolation, and machismo—and the hard times—of life in the new Cuba. Moved to a government boarding school, Nieve tries to learn the rules: good table manners, for example, are bourgeois. She does have great sex, and she loves writing about it. But she hates military training: forget killing for the good of the nation. The novel, winner of the 2006 Bruguera Prize and translated into eight languages, tells a gripping story of wry contradictions and confusion. --Hazel Rochman

In the diaries of a child into womanhood, I felt compassion and was pleased she could find comfort in writing. Later her choices seemed lacking in backbone that I really wanted her to have. I felt anger toward those who should have helped, but didn't. Of course, I really know nothing about the circumstances under which she lived. The diary certainly gives the reader the view into a world different from what most of the readers see and live. The reader must have an open mind and willingness to see beyond the surface of her life. This is a fairly quick read and worth the time as a Kindle choice from Amazon.

Wendy Guerra remains in the shadows in Cuba; as Cuba reveals itself, I hope she will become more visible, recognized in her country, and practiced in her story-telling. Her diary, the kernel of this "coming of age" story, foreshadows many more detailed vignettes of life as it has been. She is a fine observer, fluid, understated, direct. She should be ready to pour out narrative; she and Cuba on a matched trajectory, the right woman in the right time. This book is just the pre-quel.

Written as a series of diary entries by a young girl - over a period of time. Very depressing in it's depiction of Castro's Cuba and the sociological impact of some of their decrees. A very dysfunctional family, not helped by -in my opinion - a very dysfunctional system of government. That said - I don't know if it would be any better in the USA.

Basically this is a very intriguing story of a young girl living in restrictive deprivation in Cuba. The main character is appealing and the story is written. My attention wandered during pages of rambling from Antonio's farewell letter and the ending, while touching, was unclear and seemed rushed.

Everyone Leaves traces the Cuban revolution through the eyes of a young woman growing up in Cuba as part of the government-persecuted literati and arts community. She tells her tale through journal entries so beautifully expressed and often poignant that the book quickly becomes a page-turner. I found myself highlighting a number of passages simply because of how well they were crafted.

This book does give a snapshot of what life is like in Cuba. There are a number of poignant anecdotes, a strange combination of love and hate for this troubled island. I did not find the writing, however, to be as poetic or captivating as I expected. My guess is that some of the poetry is lost in translation.

The voice is beautiful, and I love how readers follow the young protagonist as she discovers and uncovers her worlds. The descriptions of life in Cuba, especially the Havana entries, are haunting, and leave a sense of melancholy not easily forgotten.

She's just a really great writer. Wish there were more of her novels translated into English.

Another HOME RUN in this series!I caught a couple of typos in this one that made following the reading a little difficult, but the book is very informative, with clear and concise directions and a step-by-step guide that is easy to follow. I didn't feel overwhelmed by a wave of jargon that is typical in a lot of books on the subject. But at the same time, I didn't feel like I was reading Coding for Dummies. This was a very practical approach to instruction that I appreciate and can fully understand. After reading this book I could see where I was and how far I had come in understanding JavaScript!

This is a great guide for beginners. The author really spells out the concepts and commands in a way that is easy to understand. There is a brief history on JavaScript and how it was developed and named. There is also a lot of information on the benefits you can get from using JavaScript to program. There are a lot of terms and ideas in this book that are new to me, as I am just a beginner, but I feel like I have a much better understanding of the process now. I will be using this book as a reference in the future!

Javascript is a valuable programming language with a large array of uses. It is practical, efficient, and most importantly can be modified easily. No matter what you want to learn or to do in future it will be your greatest asset and the best reference point for the future programming.I have learning javascript for more than a year now and i still believe and i know nothing at all java-script gives me that much freedom and limitless opportunity. My younger brother is also likes javascript and i have purchased this book for him i really believe this book will help him to get introduced with the javascript properly and be familiar with javascript coding and programming. Very much appreciated and recommended for every beginners as well as advanced users.

Javascript is a popular client-side scripting language that is used to develop products and applications to run in a web browser. This book provided a step-by-step guide in learning programming which is definitely designed for beginners. What I appreciate from this book is the idea of learning by doing through the practical examples given. This book also contains a brief history of javascript, features, uses, ways to write, and a lot about javascript.

This is the first book in a series. It is an ideal informative read. Throughout the book, Nathan gives plenty of examples and explains things well. This is the best JavaScript book I have ever browsed so far. Clearly, Nathan is an expert and I have no hesitation in recommending his book. I received this as a free download. Recommend choice.

Lots of information here, but no real writing. It's difficult to tell when the author is deliberately writing bad code or has not caught a typo in proofreading. Every time I got to a section that proposed to explain a question I had wondered about, I left more confused than I started.

I opened the book in the Kindle app on my tablet and then walked through the exercises on my computer. Everything was clear and easy to follow. At no point did I get "lost". This is really a great introduction to JavaScript. If you think you might want to gain expertise with this important computer tool, this is an easy (and inexpensive) way to test your aptitude.

I found this to be a great introduction to JavaScript. The programming is presented in an easy to understand format and is well written. I have read another of Nathan's books and found he has a great talent for teaching new things with easy to follow examples.
