GEORGE “GK” KLEIN is a Memphis native and a pioneering disc jockey and television host. He and Elvis met in eighth grade at Humes High in North Memphis, and they became lifelong friends. Today, Klein hosts a program for Sirius XM Radio’s Elvis channel, Memphis Sounds for WYPL-18 TV, and the Elvis Hour for WMC radio in Memphis, where he lives with his wife, Dara. He misses Elvis every day.CHUCK CRISAFULLI is a veteran entertainment journalist and author, most recently of Go to Hell: A Heated History of the Underworld, and Me and a Guy Named Elvis, with Jerry Schilling.

george first met elvis in the 8th grade in 1948. they casually become friends and over the next few years, become better friends as elvis's music career starts taking off (george also worked as radio dj in memphis during this time). lots of fun and great elvis stories told with such class!! my fave elvis story george tells is when elvis is still making a name for himself in memphis and george is still working as a local dj. george would read off the next few songs on the air and say something like 'this is dj-uh-gk' *george's initials*. when elvis would see george around town, elvis would call george 'dj uh' LOL!!! that alone cracked me up!there's also great pics from george's own collection in the book and i esp. love the elvis stories from the early days @ humes. george should consider doing a movie from his book! vh1 movie, hallmark movie...anything!! but great book! i highly recommend it :)
Couldn't help but reliving the days with GK and The King. I definitely want to meet GK at Graceland and ask him a few questions about his life long experience as a Memphis Mafia member and right-hand man to Elvis.The book is definitely classy as the marketing quote from Priscilla says. GK is largely classy throughout. There was one specific part of the book where "someone" disrespected Elvis and GK said "No F U" to the offending personality. Other than that, the book was reasonably sanitized for public consumption and GK didn't mince words with phrases that indicated that perhaps there were a few times when a particular encounter was less remembrance of introductions and names.This is definitely a book about Elvis Presley as told from GK's memories. What we learn is that GK is a real, live human being who was an integral part of Graceland and the MM and all of the facets of EP that others could only wish. I honestly wanted to hear more of GK's story, but the title isn't GK, my life as a DJ and my best man, EP.I think that GK makes a great storyteller and gives us a lot of special insights to his years as one of Elvis' most trusted and respected RHM. Dating back to their earliest days of young adulthood and moving through until Elvis' horribly unfortunate and young death (I can't even imagine the pain GK suffered), GK was and is and always has been a life-long and true friend of Elvis'. His work today at Sirius/XM on the Elvis channel is clearly the DJ job that is and always was his since the technology was born.GK does tell it to us in a very classy manner. If you happen to reflect back on your own life at 20-something, there are probably a few things that you might say were not particularly classy. Imagine being the RHM of the world's biggest star EVER. You're going to have some good days and some bad days, for sure.I can't imagine anybody who misses Elvis more than GK. I know that there must be a few who miss him "equally" but definitely not more. My heart goes out to GK for his very personal loss of his best friend in the entire world and forever after. This is what the book says to me. GK is perhaps a bit more reserved in some places out of respect for the living and for Elvis' memory, but nobody hurt as much as he did on the day that Elvis departed and I feel it in his words. Others were very much pained, too. The entire nation mourned the loss of our greatest talent and showmanship entertainer to-date.Michael Jackson may have him "slightly" on the numbers game, but I think that we all know, being there first is and was the hardest role of all.GK is one of the few people alive today who was as tight with The King of Rock and Roll as ever could be.I often imagine a time when I meet GK for the first time. The words are simple and clear to me. "Hey GK." They are the same words that he often heard from Elvis and for which anybody else saying them is "not quite the same." GK if you're listening, the best of everything to you. I truly appreciate what you're doing on S/XM and nobody even comes close to the world's greatest job compared to your's. How truly awesome it must be to be a DJ (your life in a nutshell) at Graceland (your home with the King) and playing the best cuts of your Best Man's. You are truly blessed and, yes, you have made a significant point about the south and race relations and how Memphis was and is a place where race was just something that was obvious and not a problem or an occurrence.You are and the book is a top-class act and total performance of love, respect, honor and adoration of our fallen hero EAP. Through thick and thin, you were his friend and confidant. Thank you for putting to pen the most intimate moments of your life with our shared and most profound rock star, Elvis Presley...and, thank you for speaking up when you did and taking credit for what you did, too. You wouldn't be a RHM if you didn't.
My wife and I got to meet Mr. George Klein at the ELVIS RADIO on my wife's birthday and he signed the book, It is a great read for someone who wants to know about Elvis Presley as a fan, but what he was like as a friend. George met Elvis when they were 12 year old and went to the same High School their friendship developed more after GK was a DJ in the fifty's and Elvis's singing career started. If you listen to the GK hours on Friday on the ELVIS RADIO on XM/Serisus radio you will appreciate this book.
I am giving George Klein's story of his friendship with Elvis 5 stars even though he didn't put pictures in this Kindle version. What George did, however, was give us insight that only someone who was there, with Elvis, could have done.I saw Elvis on the Dorsey show before Ed Sullivan ever heard of him and was a fan from that night, on.George Klein was a good influence on Elvis, and he brings the King back to life.This book reads as an honest love of his friend and vice versa.George has had many firsts and he can claim many meetings with stars and celebrities.I will never forgive Colonel Tom Parker for robbing Elvis of so many dreams, meaningful pursuits and opportunities that may have kept Elvis with us for so many more years.
Very detailed narrative that focuses exactly on its title - it's a GREAT ride through early rock and roll, GK's DJ career and starts with the earliest recollection of Elvis by GK - from his first junior high encounter with his classmate to Elvis' death in 1977. The prose moves well with lots of early Elvis pranks and high jinx that we haven't heard before. You really get an idea of the excitement Elvis created in the 1950's. Excellent! No one on earth has done MORE to promote the memory and legend of Elvis than GK through his daily satellite radio show. With his experience as a DJ he has unlimited access to Elvis' incomplete songs, outtakes, musical archive, etc. And this book is much like his show - personal, flowing, truthful and inspiring. Surely one of the best books ever written about Elvis. There is one incident from the 1950's friendship that really was well written and touching - the Colonel asked GK to blizt the media and tell them that Elvis' troop train was to be in Memphis before they headed to the East Coast to deploy to Germany (this was right after Elvis' basic training in the Army)and GK drummed up a huge crowd of fans to meet the train as it paused in Memphis. He describes peering at the hundreds of troops until he found Elvis (who was horribly homesick) and they pressed their hands together on the train glass and then Elvis hollered out to the him and the boys from the back platform. GK describes his running after the train as it pulled away with tears streaming down his face while he waved. Now if that ain't love, I don't know what is! The book's photos are some of the best of any of the Elvis bios - I've not seen some of these before. There is one disturbing photo of Elvis holding an engraved .22 handgun up against GK's temple which is unsettling... From the looks of GK, he felt the same way... Overall, highly recommended!
