Pawpaw: In Search of America’s Forgotten Fruit, by Andrew Moore

Review

"I’m always eager to read a talented writer’s first book. For one thing, it’s full of the infectious passion for the subject that usually drives someone to write it in the first place. But more than that, authors devote to such books the kind of attention usually reserved for a firstborn child―they are scrutinized and fretted over to the finest detail. Pawpaw, a heartfelt paean to a native North American tree with edible fruits, is just such a book. I have been growing pawpaws since 1970, but never realized how much I didn’t know about the tree until reading Andrew Moore’s book. A skilled storyteller, Moore delves deeply into the world of pawpaws while managing to hold the reader’s interest through detail after detail. History, folklore, biology, taxonomy, hybridization, and everything else from slave sustenance to biochemical research are blended here.”--Guy Sternberg, The American GardenerBooklist- "The pawpaw, also sometimes called the poor man’s banana, is a common fruit growing in temperate zones across the U.S., yet it is rarely seen in the produce aisles. Hoping to shed more light on this culinary mystery, as well as inspire consumers and growers to make the fruit popular again, first-time author and gardener Moore offers both an engaging history and a thorough cultivation guide to the pawpaw. According to Moore, the shrub-like, large-leafed pawpaw tree typically grows in clumps near river bottoms along a belt running from northern Missouri to southern Louisiana and east as far as the Atlantic Ocean. Although historically pawpaw was eaten by Native Americans and slaves, it probably owes its marketplace anonymity to a short shelf life and widely variable flavors. While it remains to be seen whether Moore’s well-written paean to the pawpaw will inspire increased production and distribution to grocery stores, uninitiated readers will be intrigued enough to want to sample the fruit at the first opportunity.”“Here is proof that culinary odysseys don’t always need to involve globetrotting or the pursuit of rare, exotic foodstuffs. But, then again, in his pursuit of the lowly American pawpaw, Andrew Moore reminds us that America was once considered an exotic destiny on its own, and has always had more than its fair share of culinary rarities.”--Damon Lee Fowler, author of Essentials of Southern Cooking and Beans, Greens, & Sweet Georgia Peaches“Tropical growers have many shade crops to choose from, like cacao and coffee. Here in eastern North America we have our own luscious fruit for shady places―the pawpaw. Andrew Moore’s Pawpaw tells the story of this fruit and the people working to bring it to our gardens, markets, and restaurants. It’s the story of an eastern native fruit on its way to domestication, finally earning the place in our hearts and our cuisine that it deserves.”--Eric Toensmeier, author of Paradise Lot and Perennial Vegetables"Andrew Moore has done an amazing job demystifying one of America’s most misunderstood and neglected fruits. Pawpaw deftly navigates between his own personal journey and the facts and history of the fruit, leaving readers―including chefs interested in heritage and tradition―with a true sense of how important it is to embrace this indigenous treasure."--Travis Milton, chef and co-owner of Shovel and Pick, Richmond, Virginia“This book took me on an enchanting and engaging ride through the history, folklore, and science of a neglected but magical food plant. Andrew Moore shows us, in delightful prose and a wealth of fascinating stories, the role that the under-appreciated pawpaw has played in North American culture. I was constantly surprised to learn of the quiet influence the pawpaw has had on the people and environment around it, and like the author, am hopeful that it can find its rightful place among the better-known fruits that we all love.”--Toby Hemenway, author of Gaia’s Garden and The Permaculture City“Like a gumshoe detective, Andrew Moore tracks down a mystery at once horticultural and culinary: Why is the pawpaw, America’s largest indigenous fruit, so little known? The answer, like the fruit’s beguiling taste, proves multi-layered and slippery, and after reading Moore’s engaging account, I’m ready to light out for pawpaw country myself in search of this homegrown original.”--Langdon Cook, author of The Mushroom Hunters: On the Trail of an Underground America“This book is a love song, singing the praises of a unique, delicious, and once-abundant fruit that has been sadly neglected. Andrew Moore takes us on a very personal journey investigating how and why North America's largest indigenous fruit largely disappeared, and documenting efforts to revive it. Pawpaw is a pleasure to read, and if you do you'll probably find yourself searching for and loving these delectable fruits.”--Sandor Ellix Katz, author of The Art of Fermentation“America, get ready for pawpaw mania! Andrew Moore’s book tells the definitive story of the wild fruit that is part of our nation’s heritage, and in the process the author joins the ranks of food-preservationist heroes. Prepare to be overwhelmed with longing for the sweet scent and taste of the pawpaw.”--Poppy Tooker, host of Louisiana Eats!“Pawpaw: In Search of America’s Forgotten Fruit is a fun and well-researched, informative romp through the culture and horticulture of this uncommon fruit. Uncommon, yes, but who would have imagined that there were and are quite a few other pawpaw nuts out there? If you don’t know pawpaws, you should, and you will.”--Lee Reich, PhD, author of Uncommon Fruits for Every Garden

If you're curious about the largest edible fruit native to the United States, Andrew Moore's "Pawpaw: In Search of America's Forgotten Fruit" might be the place to go. The author relates an enormous body of interesting information about the pawpaw, and he writes well. For this I give the book 5 stars. In addition to educating the reader about pawpaws, the author educates us about his personal expeditions in search of specific pawpaw trees or fruit or persons somehow associated with pawpaws, and the tales pall. Minus one half star. The litany of names of persons associated with pawpaws, no matter how tangential to the greater theme, and descriptions of their clothing and facial features reminded me of sitting in a coffee house listening to the endless wails of the evening's folk singer when eventually every song sounds like the last. Minus one and half stars.Net three stars.

Great book on Pawpaw - the only book still in print on the subject that I could find.My brother sent me some pawpaw fruit to try last year and we all enjoyed it so much I wanted to learn more about this Native American fruit.Well everything you ever wanted to know about Pawpaw is in this book. The history of Pawpaw in the US, where to buy seeds, trees, how to plant, where to plant, festivals, growers and shippers of the fruit, etc.I am hoping to get to a Pawpaw festival and possibly grow some in NJ.

Hoo! Who'd ever think someone would write a whole book about PawPaws! It's really an Adventure Story, very well written and absorbing, while also containing a lot of hard-to-find information about our "local" Wonder-Fruit. I even learned how to pollinate my PawPaw trees - I'd have never gotten fruit without reading this! PawPaw BTW is not Papaya; it's often called a "Custard Apple" and it's an apt description. Ask your local Greengrocer to get you some Cherimoyas early next year (usually Feb-May, but it varies a lot) - Cherimoyas grow in Hawaii and California. These close relatives grow further north. Many healing properties as well as being nutritious and indulgently tasty.

This book is so interesting and fun! Bought it for a gift, but after perusing it I realized I had to get my own copy. If you are interested in indigenous fruits of the south, or you remember your granny having a paw paw tree in her back yard -- get this book! Then plant a paw paw in YOUR yard, of course :)

I am really enjoying the book on paw paws and it has inspired me to track down some trees for my yard. Interested and nicely researched, interspersed with the author's travels and experiences.

This book has been an amazing read; it's makes me incredibly sad about American agriculture in its current state, but also so hopeful that we may be able to return to a sustainable permaculture to benefit the people soon. It's thoughtful, meaningful, and tells an amazing story.

very informative

THIS SUCH A GOOD BOOK, INTERESTING SUBJECT AND QUITE WELL WRITTEN. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT

Amazon.com Review

A Q&A with Wendy Guerra Question: What inspired you to write Everyone Leaves? Wendy Guerra: My parents' deaths, both in 2004, and the disappearance of a generation that is dying much sooner than its predecessors. The rediscovery of my childhood diary and the need to tell my life story through a girl in this fictitious socialist reality. I'd never known a book that spoke about life under socialism in a child's voice. In my childhood, Cuba was a place where parents had no say about whether you handled firearms at 13, or if you went to school by yourself in the countryside, or whether you aspired to university studies. Parents didn't control their children's destinies. So I decided to graft a story on this non-reality in a place that isn't what it seems, about a diaspora that every generation has had to deal with in its own way. Everyone Leaves is my exorcism from childhood and from my "inxile." Q: Your narrator, Nieve, would be roughly the same age as you are today. Do you have anything in common? WG: I used my own real diary as the spine for this novel, working in other stories in a kind of Aristotelian weave. I choose my own memories of what happened during that time. They were very tough times of silence and farewells. When I reread my diary, I decided to lower the heat a little bit, to be a little less judgmental than I'd been as a girl. Kids are usually sharper than any politician. They can tell what's going on and judge from a very honest perspective. Q: Do you still keep a personal diary? If so, does it provide content for your fiction? WG: Usually I write in my diary every day and then revise it, go over it with a more critical and literary rigor. Later, it becomes a novel. Q: Why did you decide to write about Cuba? WG: For me, what's important is that Cuba's story be told. Our lives--which have been lived in isolation, put on hold for 50 years, displaced from the markets, and incubated without capitalist references--are as complex as magic. Q: What other books would you recommend to Amazon customers who are interested in Cuban life and history? WG: No one can understand Cuba without reading Virgilio Piñera. And it's impossible to understand the sounds of Cuba without knowing the work of Nicolás Guillén.

From Booklist

The political and the personal come together—and both prove surprising—in this prize-winning novel based on the author’s diaries about growing up during and after the Cuban revolution. Translated from the Spanish, the entries (from 1978, when Nieve is seven years old, to 1990) are true to the young protagonist’s often bewildered viewpoint as she tries to sort through the adults’ mixed messages. Of course, “everyone leaves” who was part of the privileged old system but, later, so do many disappointed revolutionaries. Meanwhile, the regime is watching Nieve’s radical artist mother, who shouts at the government demonstration: “This is not what the revolution is about.” Never preachy, the commentary captures the monotony, isolation, and machismo—and the hard times—of life in the new Cuba. Moved to a government boarding school, Nieve tries to learn the rules: good table manners, for example, are bourgeois. She does have great sex, and she loves writing about it. But she hates military training: forget killing for the good of the nation. The novel, winner of the 2006 Bruguera Prize and translated into eight languages, tells a gripping story of wry contradictions and confusion. --Hazel Rochman

In the diaries of a child into womanhood, I felt compassion and was pleased she could find comfort in writing. Later her choices seemed lacking in backbone that I really wanted her to have. I felt anger toward those who should have helped, but didn't. Of course, I really know nothing about the circumstances under which she lived. The diary certainly gives the reader the view into a world different from what most of the readers see and live. The reader must have an open mind and willingness to see beyond the surface of her life. This is a fairly quick read and worth the time as a Kindle choice from Amazon.

Wendy Guerra remains in the shadows in Cuba; as Cuba reveals itself, I hope she will become more visible, recognized in her country, and practiced in her story-telling. Her diary, the kernel of this "coming of age" story, foreshadows many more detailed vignettes of life as it has been. She is a fine observer, fluid, understated, direct. She should be ready to pour out narrative; she and Cuba on a matched trajectory, the right woman in the right time. This book is just the pre-quel.

Written as a series of diary entries by a young girl - over a period of time. Very depressing in it's depiction of Castro's Cuba and the sociological impact of some of their decrees. A very dysfunctional family, not helped by -in my opinion - a very dysfunctional system of government. That said - I don't know if it would be any better in the USA.

Basically this is a very intriguing story of a young girl living in restrictive deprivation in Cuba. The main character is appealing and the story is written. My attention wandered during pages of rambling from Antonio's farewell letter and the ending, while touching, was unclear and seemed rushed.

Everyone Leaves traces the Cuban revolution through the eyes of a young woman growing up in Cuba as part of the government-persecuted literati and arts community. She tells her tale through journal entries so beautifully expressed and often poignant that the book quickly becomes a page-turner. I found myself highlighting a number of passages simply because of how well they were crafted.

This book does give a snapshot of what life is like in Cuba. There are a number of poignant anecdotes, a strange combination of love and hate for this troubled island. I did not find the writing, however, to be as poetic or captivating as I expected. My guess is that some of the poetry is lost in translation.

The voice is beautiful, and I love how readers follow the young protagonist as she discovers and uncovers her worlds. The descriptions of life in Cuba, especially the Havana entries, are haunting, and leave a sense of melancholy not easily forgotten.

She's just a really great writer. Wish there were more of her novels translated into English.

Another HOME RUN in this series!I caught a couple of typos in this one that made following the reading a little difficult, but the book is very informative, with clear and concise directions and a step-by-step guide that is easy to follow. I didn't feel overwhelmed by a wave of jargon that is typical in a lot of books on the subject. But at the same time, I didn't feel like I was reading Coding for Dummies. This was a very practical approach to instruction that I appreciate and can fully understand. After reading this book I could see where I was and how far I had come in understanding JavaScript!

This is a great guide for beginners. The author really spells out the concepts and commands in a way that is easy to understand. There is a brief history on JavaScript and how it was developed and named. There is also a lot of information on the benefits you can get from using JavaScript to program. There are a lot of terms and ideas in this book that are new to me, as I am just a beginner, but I feel like I have a much better understanding of the process now. I will be using this book as a reference in the future!

Javascript is a valuable programming language with a large array of uses. It is practical, efficient, and most importantly can be modified easily. No matter what you want to learn or to do in future it will be your greatest asset and the best reference point for the future programming.I have learning javascript for more than a year now and i still believe and i know nothing at all java-script gives me that much freedom and limitless opportunity. My younger brother is also likes javascript and i have purchased this book for him i really believe this book will help him to get introduced with the javascript properly and be familiar with javascript coding and programming. Very much appreciated and recommended for every beginners as well as advanced users.

Javascript is a popular client-side scripting language that is used to develop products and applications to run in a web browser. This book provided a step-by-step guide in learning programming which is definitely designed for beginners. What I appreciate from this book is the idea of learning by doing through the practical examples given. This book also contains a brief history of javascript, features, uses, ways to write, and a lot about javascript.

This is the first book in a series. It is an ideal informative read. Throughout the book, Nathan gives plenty of examples and explains things well. This is the best JavaScript book I have ever browsed so far. Clearly, Nathan is an expert and I have no hesitation in recommending his book. I received this as a free download. Recommend choice.

Lots of information here, but no real writing. It's difficult to tell when the author is deliberately writing bad code or has not caught a typo in proofreading. Every time I got to a section that proposed to explain a question I had wondered about, I left more confused than I started.

I opened the book in the Kindle app on my tablet and then walked through the exercises on my computer. Everything was clear and easy to follow. At no point did I get "lost". This is really a great introduction to JavaScript. If you think you might want to gain expertise with this important computer tool, this is an easy (and inexpensive) way to test your aptitude.

I found this to be a great introduction to JavaScript. The programming is presented in an easy to understand format and is well written. I have read another of Nathan's books and found he has a great talent for teaching new things with easy to follow examples.
