I actually enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. There were a number of twists I did not foresee.... like the ending. I will admit that left me feeling a little 'what the heck?!?' as the story just seemed to randomly change direction in the last chapter! I do feel that the ending let things down a little, but not a bad effort overall.

Astrid Bailey is in high school and getting perfect grades, studying and being a proper student are all her top priorities. Her parents work all the time and rarely see Astrid and her twin brother Connor. Connor doesn't care much about anything but football. Astrid is assumed to be strange and a drama queen but basically she's just a book nerd who keeps to herself.Astrid does have a few friends but can't always trust them. Her world turns upside down when she meets her bad boy neighbor Kai Asher. The story is your typical nerdy girl meets hot bad boy. Kai does give Astrid a little more confidence then what she's had in the past. The things Astrid goes through at the hands of her friends, her own twin and several students at school is heart breaking, it's no wonder she feels she doesn't belong. Seems everyone but her parents have betrayed her.The only thing I didn't like about the story is the ending. Is there a second book? Will we ever know what becomes of Astrid and what about Kai? Did he ever have true feelings for Astrid?

So much buildup that led to absolutely nothing. Every high school cliché ever put into a movie from the invention of television on was crammed into this book. It was a long road to nowhere with no real resolution. In the end she just whined to her mother then hopped on a plane, the end. I honestly wish I could give it less than one star but that's the lowest I'm allowed to rate it.

I really wanted to like this book. But it was just all over the place. First she is a loner but has a lot of close friends. Also the spelling was bad, and some of the wording had me rolling my eyes. But I did finish it. It could have been a great book with the plot.

I really wanted to like this book, but sadly, there were way too many things wrong with it. Although the editing wasn't bad, it wasn't great either. The book was written like a seventeen year old was writing in her diary, and it wasn't far from the mark. I'd say twelve was a better age. There were countless contradictions, which was super confusing at best. Scenes were incomplete and the interaction between characters were unrealistic. I found myself rolling my eyes several times and setting the book down, but then I'd pick it back up again hoping things would get better. Sadly, that didn't happen. And it was left in a cliffhanger. Obviously, I won't be buying the next book. The two stars were only for the time and effort the author put into this book. Sorry

I'm hoping theirs another book cuz the ending just stopped. I mean its a really great book but it just ends

I like the book by the end leaves you hanging. The book was published in 2016 and so far no 2nd book. Don't read it because you will be missed, unless the author disappeared from this world there is no explanation to why let your readers hanging there. I tried to email to know if there would be a second book, usually every writer responds....not this one.

Read the original version on Wattpad.. One of the best books I have read. Desirae really knows how to portray her characters in anything she writes. Makes you feel like you're there or seeing it across the giant movie screen. Seems to understand how someone can be treated the way Astrid is, like it could have happened to her or someone she knows. This new version will be even better than the original. Please follow her here and on Wattpad.com/@yabookprincess. You will not regret it. Great young writer.

About the Author

Sanjuanita Martínez-Hunter earned her bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in Dance from Texas Woman’s University. A life-long educator, Martínez-Hunter began her career teaching physical education at Lamar Junior High School in Laredo, Texas and then at the American School Foundation in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. At these institutions she directed the dance teams known as the Lamar Prancers and the Monterrey Darlings while teaching at her own dance studio. Then, she taught at the University of Texas at Austin (UT) as a Dance faculty for over twenty years where she inspired countless students. Here, she was the faculty sponsor for many dance organizations such as the UT High Steppers and El Grupo de Danza y Arte Folklorico de la Universidad de Tejas en Austin also known as the UT Ballet Folklorico. During the politically tumultuous 1970s, Martínez-Hunter was relentless in fighting administration for the acceptance of the UT Ballet Folklorico as a student organization within the Recreational Sports Division. Founding student members of this organization include: Roy Lozano and Michael Carmona. Roy Lozano would go on to dance with the Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández and then start his own professional dance company in Austin, Texas called Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico de Tejas. Michael Carmona would direct the UT Ballet Folklorico for many, many years. This writing represents her doctoral dissertation which was completed in 1984 and is entitled The Development of Dance in Mexico (1325-1910). Throughout her life, Martínez-Hunter longed to see her research in print so that it could reach a wider audience. After her death, her niece Gabriela Mendoza-García edited this manuscript as a way of commemorating her life’s work.

Magnificent historical document for all readers interested in Mexican dance history.

The book is an amazing description of the different areas of folklorico dancing and how it has developed over time in history. Easy to read and understand. I love it!

This book is a scholarly and substantiated inquiry into the relationship between Mexican history and Mexican dance, easily readable, with fascinating and documented statements on every page. Each chapter gives an era of Mexican history followed by the relationship between that era's events and its dances.Chapter 1 describes the pre-Columbian use of dance to prepare for or celebrate war or to acknowledge the indigenous pantheon.Chapter 2 describes the conquest and the usurpation of indigenous dance by Spanish missionaries to further Catholic dominion.Chapter 3 describes the Colonial importation of European and African music and dance into the New World and the exportation of dances such as sarabande and chaconne.Chapter 4 describes the Mexico of the dances that most people are familiar with, from 1810 to 1910. Religious dances became theater, and European dances such as waltz, schottische, and polka became the social bailes and jarabes of the people. (Those social dances, two generations later, became folk dances, used today to foster a Mexican national identity.)This is an unusual history of Mexico, with the constant undercurrent of the uses of dance to support a religious or plutocratic oligarchy. It provides a firm overview of Mexican dance history and a grounding for other Mexican dance books that describe specific dances. The late author was a highly respected dance educator, and this book began as her doctoral dissertation. The editor is a dance scholar whose doctoral dissertation discussed the history of the Jarabe Tapatío and its historical context. This book is a tribute to both.

Arrived on time for a Christmas gift to a folklorico instructor. They loved it!!!

The best Mexican dance book ever.
