I had avoided Andrew Wareham's books on the theory that any author who produces over two thousand pages of stories every year for five consecutive years is not producing a very polished product. This is the first book of his that I have read and nothing about it persuades me that that theory is invalid. The loose fit to actual history indicates that the author is not particularly interested in the place and period. He has committed himself to an adventure series and will presumably continue in the same slapdash manner. (Examples: Admiral Sir Edward Seymour took over as Commander-in-Chief, China Station from Sir Alexander Buller in February 1898. A battery of Krupp 21 cm guns suddenly appears, already emplaced, in a location where they could only have been brought by several hundred trained artillerymen with as many horses and several weeks to work in. British ships are drilling with gunnery practices that will not actually come into use for another ten years.) None of this requires very deep research. The author just doesn't care. The feature I particularly regret about this book is that, unlike most of the self-published books in Kindle, it has been properly copy-edited and there are a minimum of typos and grammatical errors, all pretty much wasted on an overwhelmingly mediocre story.
As usual, Wareham has delivered a promising start to another series. Set in the turn of the century Royal Navy on the China Station, this work features the usual string main character that rapidly becomes successful. Also as usual it includes a look at English society, with the attitudes and morals of late Victorian England. It is a bit of a formula for Wareham but it works. From England’s wooden walls, to the north country coal mines, from the skies of Flanders to the China coast, from New Britain to Bull Run, Wareham consistently produces wonderful characters, interesting plots, and quick reading stories. Fortunately he is also a very prolific writer, and I check frequently for new works from him. I look forward to his next book in this and his others series.
Historically accurate tale of a young navel officer sent to China after causing some embarrassment in London. Deals nicely with the way European powers operated in the area during the late nineteenth century. Its biggest weakness is the lack of character development. Characters are thinly drawn and superficial. We really get no sense of who Lord Magnus is and why we such care. The romance interest is phoned in and lacks conviction. Pleasant read, but frankly reminds me of the old Hornblower stories. All very young adult.
Period detailing is the hallmark of Andrew Wareham's novels. The details here, of Colonial Life, of sailing ships and so on are superlative in their description and in their interest to the reader. Wareham is the greatest thing since Horatio Alger for chronicling the 'rise' of a fine young man from humble circumstances or from 'honorable adversity.' Highly recommended page turner! MY COMPLAINT: this fine author starts too many series and then we are left longing for the next in this series or that series.
Mr. Wareham is a prolific writer of historical series, and it is a fine thing to see him tackle the Far East in 1896. There are faint echoes of "The Sand Pebbles" and "55 Days in Peking" here, but much of the focus of the book is on the naval weaponry and internal debates within the Royal Navy, somewhat stodgily offered in artificial dialogue that does not sound natural.But there is a lot of history contained in the book, and also a more human drama as the young Commander, a Scottish lord but younger son, seeks to resurrect a career jeopardized by a youthful fling. There are attitudes expressed that are not PC but clearly fit the times and class of the speakers. The adventures are moderately interesting.
I read this book with great hopes it would be another great sea faring adventure. I read a book of details and suspicious upper class dialogue insulting and critiquing one another. In the 1890-1900s were the upper classes so crass and indeed bluntly insulting one another? I had hoped for more adventure details rather than the quick summaries I found. Surly the battle scenes could have been better described and experienced. I will not be inclined to read further in this series.
I read all of Andrew Wareham's Duty and Destiny series, and loved them. He carried on the same theme, just a century later. Wareham has a way of skewering the English upper classes with his droll, wry, tongue in cheek sense of humor, while at the same time, educating you about how conditions really were. Plenty of action, with a realistic approach to the extracurricular activities of the main character, something often ignored in this genre. Highly recommended!
I have read all of the "Man of Conflict", as well as "Duty and Destiny" series. Love this author! This a bit more modern but still the same flawed protagonist. These are whole, believable characters. As a necessity, there is always a battle in each novel. Very much akin to the "Master and Commander" and "Horatio Hornblower " series, all of which I highly recommend. This a hardworking, gifted author. You will not be disappointed.
