I am extremely disappointed by the EXTREME lack of diversity in this book. There are ZERO kids of color represented as superheroes and only 3/14 superheroes are female. This is disgraceful. Returning this book immediately as I will not subject my children to this type of subconscious message.

Fantastic, inspiring book! I bought another to give to my friend, who is also a music teacher. There’s not much about Dudamel in here, which is as it should be — it’s more about El Sistema, which produced him, and the should-be-canonized Abreu. What an incredible human being! We can all learn from him, the incredible work he has done, and all the lives he has changed and saved.

The story narrated in this book is breathtaking. How one man, Juan Antonio Abreu, and his dream of El Sistema, transformed Venezuela from a country whose professional orchestra employed no Venezuelans to a country where EVERY child has the right to study music with gifted teachers for as many years as they wish, to have an instrument to play, and the opportunity to play in musical groups of all sizes and talent. Now the country has several world-class orchestras of young people and even school children who are invited all over the world to play for sophisticated musical audiences and then treated to enthusiastic standing ovations and patrons shouting approval! These young musicians are proficient not only in all genres of European music, they are also proficient in Latin American music, both popular and classical. It’s been a long time since I read one of Christianson’s books. This one has some really good ideas. I’ve often wondered why some countries stay poor even when they have a wealth of resources. I believed it was cultural, but I think I may be wrong. The South Korea example is perfect. They created prosperity through their choice of markets. Countries that focus on infrastructure and aid never seem to improve. We see the same thing in our cities. What if they focused on unserved markets instead of welfare. It might make a difference.

This book has been well- thought out, well-reasoned, and is a great work addressing challenges in the developing world as an excellent follow-on to the disruptive innovation work that has defined Christensen's career. Efosa Ojomo and Karen Dillon as excellent co-authors and their insights shine through as well. This book should be required reading for every course on international development at every business school and every public policy school! All International Dev professionals should have this book in their personal and office libraries! Can't wait for the next installment from this dynamic trio!

I got to read today for my son's classroom for first graders and really wanted to have them understand empathy. Too many people nowadays aren't able to relate to others cause they're caught up in themselves or what they believe. This book was able to get that point across clearly to these little ones with really cute pictures they enjoyed and not too much vocabulary to sift through.

I brought this book for my 5 year-old son because he is learning about his feelings as well as other people feelings. I purchased When I feel Angry by the same author and my son knows the difference between feeling angry and reacting to his angry. This books help young children to care and respect others. My son now understand he is not the only person with with feelings. This is a must have for all parents of young children!!!

Helps my little ones identify their feelings better.

I selected this book for my 2 year old, who sometimes hits her older sister. Through simple language you can reinforce what it means to be empathetic (rather than focusing on anger management). I also reinforce some of the language from the book when she has a time out and I think it gives her a better understanding of why she shouldn't hit (which is typically out of frustration). She learns that it is not acceptable behavior because it is hurtful, not just because Mommy and Daddy say so. This book covers many caring/hurtful emotions and acceptable behaviors that a young child can understand.

Love this series!

I have several of the books in this series and they teach a great message in a simple way that young children can understand. I recommend them for all kids, especially those with behavioral problems.

It would have been very helpful for me to read this book prior to constructing my own backyard system. Unfortunately it was not published yet back then. If you're new to aquaponics or just want to deepen your knowledge about the techniques I highly recommend the book. It contains the basics + it explains various systems.I loved the fact that each description of the systems included a detailed list of building materials to be used.Maybe the 2nd edition will contain more information on how to operate each of the systems and a full section on how to fight against bugs/ aphids and what you can add to the system without killing the fish or the plants.

Poorly written. Pictures not legible. All measurements in metric. Looks like it was printed on a home copier with newspaper Waste of $

Outstanding book for beginner aquaponics. So much good information on every aspect. First couple chapters was a bit to "global warming" oriented, but the meat of the book is incredibly informative

Very basic introduction to aquaponics designed for "beginners", but like so many others it contains little of value beyond perhaps the instructions for assembly of small beginner systemsSadly it doesn't provide any beginner with any real knowledge as to the principles or understanding of the "how to" of aquaponics, and is really just another of the plethora of generalised google collations on the subject.Even sadder is the fact that some of the information is either wrong, misunderstood, or misinterpreted.. or flawed in terms of design and/or application...perhaps a reflection of the authors level of knowledgeHaving said that.. it's no worse than the many other such kindle or paperback offerings on the subject, but neither is it any better than most, and certainly not really worthy of the term "An essential step by step guide for beginners".. even with the included system build instructionsIs it worth the price asked.... probably... but that's not really a glowing recommendation

This book is an obvious attempt to take advantage of the top ranked aquaponics book on Amazon, which was published in 2011 and still is the top seller on this topic. The title of the top ranked book is "Aquaponic Gardening A Step-By-Step Guide to Raising Vegetables and Fish Together". The title of this book is Aquaponics: An Essential Step-by-Step Guide to Aquaponics for Beginners". Notice the extreme similarity? Now check out the cover designs of the two books and see how you could easily confuse one for the other. Last, buyer beware - this book is listed as 120 pages which is not a lot of room to cover this subject.

I am not an aquaponics expert but I feel that I know enough to provide a decent review. First the pluses-the book provides good directions for the actual construction of a decent sized system. I liked the discussion of the various crops and fish. As for the minuses, the author did not include a warning about the potential for a used IBC that had previously contained toxic substances (and would contaminate the aquaponics system) Also, the index did not reference page numbers in the book. As for growing carrots, it says that they do well in media beds but it is my understanding that you have to use sand media (vs gravel) This is in order to obtain carrots that are smooth and attractive. I also did not see information on startup or water chemistry.In conclusion, I think it is a good book if you are mainly interested in instructions on how to construct a medium sized system and crop and fish selection.
