I am only on the third art yarn technique in this book, the tornado (which is still in chapter one) and I am LOVING it. I just want to make tornadoes all day long. Jacey is right when she says you will learn a lot about what you thought you already knew; I feel like I'm learning to spin all over again. I'm learning more about how to use my wheel, particularly tension; I'm getting more control - working with three strands of different yarn and one roving and getting them to come together in something that looks like a tornado but with some artistic value is so satisfying. The yarn is turning out great and it's so forgiving (i.e. you can't tell where it's mucked up when the whole thing is a tornado!)I went back briefly to spin a traditional yarn and it actually felt different. It was easier and I noticed that I did have more control.This book opens up a whole new world of creativity with yarn and I am enjoying it tremendously.
I have been spinning less than a year and am very grateful for this book and the DVD that comes with it. Jacey Boggs is that one in a million teacher that we all hope to have. Her easy to follow DVD has helped me jump into textural yarns and the book is one I have read over and over. She has sound, logical advise and I would recommend this as a must have book for any spinner's library. If you don't know, Jacey also has an incredible publication called Ply magazine which is packed from cover to cover with very valuable, sound information. Truly she is a gift to the fiber world. LOVE!
I've been spinning for years and didn't have much use for novelty yarns. What do you do with them? And why waste all that time for a yarn that in the end wasn't all that useful? Then I saw this book. It's not really that the novelty yarns presented are better than they've ever been, but the explanations of how to make them--and why are beyond wonderful and the yarns themselves are fantastic eye candy. There are no finished projects in the book (unless the yarn itself counts, and that's just fine by me), but the beauty of the yarns and the clarity of the presentation made me start looking for the possibilities. And don't overlook the included DVD. I'm not much on instructional videos, but this one is very good AND shows knitted swatches. Best spinning money I ever spent!
The DVD in this book is the best part! While Jacey can't help but have some cross-over similarities with Lexi Boeger's work, they both have unique techniques to get a spinner inspired to go the next level up in creative yarning. Crazy stuff in that DVD and very well organized with music and staging. This is for the true lover of spinning.
This book and DVD are exactly what I hoped for. Good video, clear directions, excellent examples. Jacey is a wonderful teacher. I hope to see her in person some time soon.
After years of spinning gurus teaching us to spin finer and finer, Jacey has made spinning fun again. Funky yarns and colors. One disappointment is that this book is tamed down somewhat from her first DVD; the set is bland and the yarns have become "useful" And I miss the band with crazy wool hats.But seriously fellow spinners, this book is fantastic. You can read about the spinning tecniques, then watch Jacey actually do it. What a great idea! Then if you need a quick refresher, look back at the book. Useable for beginning or advanced spinner.Jacey is aware of balance and structure, so your yarns will not only be cool but you can actually knit and wear them!AND this book DVD combo is a great price. You can't go wrong here, get it for your library!
After spinning even textured yarns for over 30 years, I'm ready to try something new. Spin Art: Mastering the Craft of Spinning Textured Yarn is what I've been looking for to teach me how. The DVD is great. I would definitely sign up for a class with Jacey Boggs. This book/DVD set is the next best thing. Jacey's approach is filled with common sense and she recommends using the equipment you have. You don't have to go out and buy a special wheel to create textured yarn.
Jacey Boggs did a fabulous job on this book! the photos are stunning, the instruction is clear and easy to follow and her tips are very helpful. I love that she added a dvd and have viewed it several times, she is very charming and ingageing. I purchased her book before it came out, I order 2 copies and was confident it would be a great spinning book because I have read her articles shes done for spin-off magazine. She did not let me down, and I hope she writes another!
