About the Author

David Money Harris Associate Professor of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA, holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and S.B. and M.Eng. degrees from MIT. His research interests include CMOS VLSI design, microprocessors, and computer arithmetic. He holds a dozen patents, is the author of three other books in the field of digital design and three hiking guidebooks, and has designed chips at Sun Microsystems, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, and Evans & Sutherland.    Neil Weste is a member of the faculty at the Department of Electronic Engineering, Macquarie University; Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at The University of Adelaide; and Director, Engineering at Cisco’s Wireless Networking Business Unit. He is a Fellow of the IEEE for his contributions to custom IC design, and a peer elected member of the IEEE Solid State Circuits Society. In 1997 he cofounded Radiata Communications (with David Skellern) which designed the first chip sets for the IEEE 802.11a WLAN standard; in 2001 Radiata was acquired by Cisco. He has served as department head at Bell Laboratories; leader of design projects for Symbolics, Inc.; and as president of TLW, Inc., an IC engineering company that completed groundbreaking chip designs for companies such as North American Philips, Analog Devices, AT&T Microelectronics and Thomson Consumer Electronics.

It's awesome. For someone like me, I needed simple but detailed technical knowledge, I found that in this book.

It's great, it came quickly, is what I wanted, and it is in good shape.

This book offers a good review of basics as well as more advanced CMOS design. While some sections are very lacking in examples, there is a lot of good information buried in the reading which keeps it interesting enough to actually read through (assuming you are pretty into what you do/read). The HDL examples are useful if you have access to the design tools you need to actually play with.

I spent four years in Pohnpei, part of which when Jonathan Gourlay was there. I can vouch for the story.I kept a fair distance between the sakau bars and myself. As soon as I arrived, I took to heart the words of wiser more experienced expats, i.e. don't go local and always keep close by funds to fly out off the island in case things go bad.For most of the expats life in the Federated States of Micronesia was unexpected and only lasted a two year contract. Many escaped from a humdrum existence and went wild. Many were confused and remained so. Many worked and made a contribution.You really are a stranger in a strange land

This memoir is touching, hilarious, and incredibly interesting. More importantly though the writing is fantastic. I had heard that he attended the Iowa Writer's Workshop and, having read this book, I am not surprised. He has done that program proud! A seemingly mundane topic (two people sitting in an open-air bar by the side of the road) becomes a lesson about the Pohnpeian culture. And a very funny one at that. I look forward to reading a lot more from Mr. Gourlay in the future.

I am an expat too. Jonathan Gourlay did something really special with this essay collection (don't get confused, that's what it is), and while the blurb is fairly inappropriate for what it is, if you are also sort of in a rough place in life or somewhat confused about what being "here" means, or even if you're just trying to understand a culture you'll never really understand....this book is amazing. Again, something special is at the core of this, and that is more than I could've asked for.Gourlay - call me. Let's collab on your next one, ok?

This is a very sad short book, sad in its descriptions, in its imagery, and in its author's substantial suffering (often self-induced suffering) in Micronesia. It has glimmers of truly excellent writing, though in parts things seem forced and repetitious. Perhaps that is merely an effect of Pohnpei on the writer though and not the other way around. A must read for those with interest in Pohnpei, and the Pacific in general.

A great story of an outsider trying really hard to fit in to a world that seems simply inexplicable to the non native. The writing is entertaining and thoughtful. The organization of chapters is highly non-linear, though, which makes for a little bit of confusion as to what's history and future at each point.

I really enjoyed the stories of adapting to life in Micronesia. There are many touching parts of raising his daughter there and the trials they went through. It was a great slice of life read

I loved it. I bought the ebook started reading immediately and couldn't stop until I ran out of pages, and found myself going back over it a few times. JG took me on an amazing journey through my own home island. This book should be mandatory reading material to all foreigners who plan on staying in Pohnpei for more than a day.

I've long enjoyed Jonathan Gourlay's essays in the Bygone Bureau website about his former life in Pohnpei as a teacher and later, unexpected family man, so I'm happy to see all of them (and more) bound together in this book. His work steers clear of sentimentality in capturing exactly what it's like to be a stranger in a strange land.Gourlay's deadpan wit, attention to detail, startling adventures, and ability to make the mundane magical collectively make for an entertaining read with true insights. This is compelling travel writing about a world most North Americans know little about from an insider who understands how to tell a story. Highly recommended.

I had to write a paper for seminary school on the book of Ecclesiastes. I purchased this book to assist in the research of the paper. This is just a fabulous book. Dr. Jeremiah writes about technical matters of Scripture but his writing is just alive. This book touched my heart and reminded me of why I became a Christian and recharged me for service to the Lord. There are so many pearls in this writing about the Christian life that I would make this book mandatory reading for all Christians if I could. Dr. Jeremiah does a marvelous job of tying the book of Ecclesiastes into the New Testament with this book as well. If I could, I would give this book ten stars. He also ties so many Scriptures into this analysis of Ecclesiastes that you get a wonderful full picture of how the Bible is really just one book woven together by 47 authors. This is a great book for both lay Christians and/or serious Christian teachers or students. I could not put the book down once I got started reading it; that says a lot when you are seminary school and there are papers due and deadlines knocking on your door.

Ecclesiastes is probably one of the most misunderstood books in the Bible. So many look at it as a negative ramble with little personal application. If you look at it that way, I encourage you to read this account by David Jeremiah. He takes it verse by verse and explains it in today's language with great personal insight. Solomon, in writing Ecclesiastes was not being negative but pointing out in a very vivid way that life is more than pleasure, personal gain, money, fortune and fame. Without God and a spiritual base in your life it is all "vanity, vanity" as he stresses throughout the book. Jeremiah, in his writing, draws from a number of resources to explain just what Solomon was trying to bring forth. If you have not read Ecclesiastes it might be helpful to do that first and then read Jeremiah's account. Regardless of your spiritual belief, I think you will find this book to be an incredible look at where much of our world is today and how we should respond to it.

I’m not finished reading Dr. Jeremiah’s book yet. I love the thorough, methodical, scripturally based handling by Dr. Jeremiah. Having just lost my wife of 60 years, I have heightened interest in where she is and what she is experiencing in the presence of our Lord. I look forward to joining her!

Excellent book. Much deeper than I thought. Author was interesting and challenging, and I, quite frankly, was blown away about the depth of wisdom of Solomon. Highly recommend if you want to get your life on track and use sound wisdom. I will give this book to friends as a gift, often.

This is a wonderful study of Ecclesiastes by David Jeremiah. It is the best study I've had on the book.

This book has good information in it but the style of writing is a little drab for my likes. Informative but doesn't grab you.

Dr. Jeremiah places into real life context Solomon's third Biblical Book. Prepare your self for a journey of learning, wisdom and understanding. This is an excellent for believers, non believers and born again evangelicals where ever they are in their walk of sanctification.

This account of Ecclesiastes, and the authors interpretation is well worth the read. Things are just not as we believe or are led to believe, and our life experience can lead us to great success or failure but not always as initially thought. Much of the smoke and mirrors are seen and our foolishness and obstacles are seen though the wisdom of Solomon. Good book for a change of perspective.

the book was really good, in fact that was the only thing keeping me from putting 1 or 2 stars. Im going to say all the prebloms. First of all, literally half the book is 'adds' for more of your books so i was expecting full book with lots of stuff . Argh! Too manny books to review. Especially if I keep up these lengths. Oh well. I'm back. I forget when I reviewed, but I'm on reviewers list?! ANYWAY...Okay so. The books now are kind of repeats of the books written before. Personally I think you should write the side views AFTER the main series POV is written. After all it is supposed to be the main series. Pitch Perfect is Perfectly on Point.I am a culinary and a communications professional with a lot of interview experience. I bought Pitch Perfect because of the author’s experience and background as a producer and a reporter—and the excellent reviews on amazon. In the beginning of the book, he tells the story of how he made the switch from being on TV to coaching people to be more effective communicators (on TV and beyond). And, his first “client” was right. He is great at it! The book feels like an extended one-on-one session. It captures the feel of a meaty working session with all of the tips, techniques and strategies for successful and effective communication laid out in simple and easily digestible terms. Not surprising, my favorite “Pitch Perfect Principle” is The Pasta-Sauce Principle which underscores my favorite cooking adage of ‘less is more.’ McGowen states, “...good communication is a lot like pasta sauce. The more you boil down and reduce a sauce, the more dynamic the flavor.”Never was a truer principle told, and by connecting it to pasta sauce, it is unforgettable. Buy the book. Read the book. Live the book. It will make all your communication better, not just interviews and presentations.

I grabbed this book after seeing Bill McGowan on the Kardashians. Ha ha! I was not disappointed! As a former professor, I REALLY appreciated that Bill spoke to a teacher's habit of over-explaining, etc... I am learning to be more concise, direct, and to-the-point in my communication.

This book is great fun and full of excellent advice. As a fairly successful public speaker (when I have had to speak), I must say that McGowan has it right. A lot of the "old" advice from the 1970s, like envisioning your audience in underwear, is ineffective, he says, and makes no sense. McGowan's better advice: There's no substitute for preparation. I loved his recommended ways of steering an inappropriate or ineffective conversation into a better path without insulting the person who went in the wrong direction. His stories about celebrities or near-celebrities who didn't heed his advice are absolutely hilarious. As McGowan says, please don't invent words in your pitch like "thrival," and expect your audience to be thrilled! You will only sound strange.

I love this book! Pitch perfect is a great guidebook for anyone who wants to make a good impression in any kind of social situation. The advice offered here can help you whether you're talking to one person or a whole audience.As a visual artist, presenting has never been my forté, in fact just the idea of being the focus of attention has always been nerve-racking for me. But I found the author's tone, wealth of experience and depth of knowledge so helpful and reassuring that I am actually looking forward to putting his ideas into play.It's hard to imagine a situation where you wouldn't benefit from the savvy advice offered here. Whether you're presenting an idea, giving a talk, being interviewed or just interacting with others you can gain really useful tips and insights on what to do as well as what not to do, to always make the best impression. As McGowan reminds us "...there are no second takes in real life. That's why it's so important to say it right the first time, every time." How true!If you're like me and not comfortable being the focus of attention it's wise to call in an expert. Reading this book is like having private practice sessions with a coach who knows the territory like the back of his hand. I appreciate how McGowan points out specific pitfalls to avoid ahead of time, this is where his experience really shines through. There is a good balance of common sense, insider information and humor that had me laughing out loud. You can learn a lot from other's mistakes illustrated throughout the book, McGowan even includes some of his own not so pitch perfect moments which kept his advice from seeming preachy. I felt encouraged throughout the book especially when he shares that "Pitch-Perfect communication is not just vital, it's also something anyone can learn." and he promises to impart everything he knows and has learned from his 30 years in television and 4,000 coaching sessions so the reader can "come away with a thorough yet simple set of principles for deftly handling a wide variety of personal and professional communications scenarios so you can achieve the best of all possible results." Wow, that's a big promise but in my opinion McGowan delivers. I can't wait to share this with my friends. I highly recommend getting the audio version too. I especially enjoyed listening to McGowan's great delivery and conversational style. It feels like he's right there with you! His level of experience and confidence spills out from every page, and I already feel greatly reassured that awkward presentations and unconscious self sabotage are now a thing of the past. Get your highlighters ready, this advice is too good to forget and worth every penny.

Some good tips but this guy uses too many unusual words in his dialogue that he does not define. Result- you have no idea what he is talking about. My vocabulary is pretty high so I don't think this would appeal to the average person. Also he uses a lot of American words and refers to American topical events and personalities. I am from New Zealand and some of the time the analogy is lost on me because I don't know what or who he is referring to. For this reason, I don't think it would make a good international book. Having said that , I am learning a lot about speaking in public and expressing myself well. But it is around a lot of words , references and stories that I have no idea what he means. Needs trimming down applying his own pasta sauce principle.

I had thought to give this book two stars, but the two-star "I don't like it" just isn't as accurate as the one-star "I hate it".The author is unceasing in congratulating himself on being the best communications coach ever while telling us how important it is to be a great pretender. There are numerous proclamations made in absolute terms which I know to be untrue from experience. The book seemed to illustrate the hollow lack of integrity in much of corporate America today.I wanted to quit after fifteen pages, I pushed all the way to page 90 and gave up, regretting the time and money spent.

Not bad. Pretty wordy and the author clearly feels he's amazing. Other than that it's got some useful nuggets in there. Recommend but look for a deal so you don't pay full price.

I have utilized the lonely planet books for previous trips and appreciated all of the good information. However, this book was disappointing as it was very "lean" on information for the Puerto Vallarta area.

LP once again delivers with a easy to use reference guide. The color regional map with general attractions in the front of the book were helpful as were the city maps. Although they did not have all the attractions and lodging information correct in the Zihuatanejo area, what's a vacation without a little surprise? If you follow these books as a recipe for a successful vacation, you are in for a surprise. I recommend the LP over many other guide books (Moon, Frommers, etc.).

I hope there is a newer version of the Lonely Planet PV and Pacific Mexico available.We felt that the room descriptions and restaurant recommendations were lacking and not in accordance with reality. I would not purchase this product again.

I did not see that this book was an older edition, I was looking for something more current like in the past year

Wooldridge has long been my first go-to source for looking up the details of an econometrics method, and I immediately bought the second edition when I saw there was one. I can spend hours working my way through it, writing out the key equations on my marker board, and come away feeling much more confident that I know what I'm doing.I envy the reviewers who call the book intuitive or an introduction. I cannot imagine using this book as an introductory textbook even at the doctoral level. This book is invaluable for someone who already has a good understanding of econometrics and wants a lot of detail and guidance in one place. I wouldn't want to live without it. But I don't think I would have been ready for it until after the second class in my doctoral econometrics sequence, or possibly the third.Several reviewers have complained about the lack of graphs. I haven't missed them, because the equations and text are very clear.

This is a great book for those who need details and explanations on "why things work a certain way", not just a manual of what kind of analysis to run. I bought it as a reference after reading the material on panel regression. It may be a little dense but it offers such a wealth of information that it is a must for anyone who needs to use statistics to analyze economic and business data.

A difficult read in spots, but a classic reference for these topics.

As a student of Jeff's so I might be a little biased but I think he is a great instructor and econometrician. He attends seminars and interacts with various researchers tackling numerous problems lending his books and his work a very practical and useful perspective.Even if this book were as expensive as other PhD econometric books I would highly recommend it. However, as that it is 1/3 to 1/4 the price of other textbooks I think it is an exceptional deal.

Though I have tried very hard to do so, I find this book is too wordy and very difficult to get what the author is trying to tell. The one thing that we are all too short on is "time". The amount of time it takes to get a tidbit from this book is very long, because it is too wordy, and pretty much most times uses terminology out of the blue - terminology that has not been explained earlier. Also, this book tends to often not explain the "why" of several procedures, thereby leaving the reader to only second guess as to what might be the reason for doing that the author is recommending....As much as I respect Prof. Wooldridge's efforts, I actually find Cameron and Trivedi's book easier to follow, and quicker to glean inferences from.

How can I review something that will take me years to digest? So far I have used the book as a reference (e.g. to find out how/why to run a Wu-Hausman test) and Wooldridge's explanations are clear without leaving out important detail. As a PhD student, I'm looking forward to the next couple of years of getting oddly intimate with this book. (I knocked off one star because there are no images, graphs, and tables. Even Greene's Econometric Analysis has visual aids - not sure why Wooldridge couldn't come up with any)

The strengths and weakness of this text is well-covered in the other reviews. I want to point out at least one serious error in the 1st edition of the book: in Chapter 12, page 357 it is claimed that the empirical Hessian may fail to be positive semidefinite. This is simply impossible since positive semidefiniteness is a necessary condition of maximization of a smooth function at an interior point.This error has been corrected in the second edition (see page 414). Spend a few dollars more, buy Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data, 2nd Edition. You also get lots of new material. (Don't know about new errors though).It is unfortunate that while Wooldridge has corrected this error in the 2nd edition, he does not mention this in the errata file on his website [as of 2011.02.28]. Led to lot of head scratching on my part.
