This book, for what it is, is invaluable. Having read it, I now know All the Facts About Africa (at least through 2011). Before, I knew that Charles Taylor was a bad guy, maybe having something to do with Liberia, and that Tutsis were massacred for some reason, but I was not able to piece together a narrative of how or why it happened. Now, I feel like I have a handle on what's going on in Africa and, importantly, can assimilate future news about the continent. This is like a textbook for an introductory course on African history (and if professors aren't using it, they should.) If I wanted to learn more about Senegalese history, or Ugandan history, it would be a great foundation. It's honestly churlish to complain about a 750-page book that covers 55 years of an entire continent -- but I will anyway. My main complaint relates to its textbookishness: Meredith offers scarcely any analysis. Why is Africa like that? Is there anything the rest of the world could have done to keep it from being such a disaster? (Would even more foreign aid have helped, or would it just have gone into somebody's pocket? Would more peacekeeping missions have worked or would they have just gotten sucked into the whirlwind of tribal politics?) What should the colonial powers have done pre-WW2? (Other than not colonize Africa duh) What should they have done post-war to prepare their colonies for independence? Was there a better way than the one they chose, or were Harold Macmillan and Charles deGaulle making the best of a bad situation? Most frustrating of all is Botswana. The history of Botswana is scarcely mentioned at all (that's not a problem in and of itself. There are a Lot of countries in Africa. The word Mauretania appears only three times in the whole book.) But occasionally Meredith will jump in to mention that almost every country in Africa had trouble with dictators, corruption, economic collapse and civil war, *except Botswana*. What did they do right? Did they have a singularly principled leader? Was it something to do with their ethnic makeup or the basis of their economy? Was it just sheer luck? Comparing Botswana with the rest of Africa would have been illuminating - but instead it's just a tease.Oh well. This is a very good book.

Martin Meredith's history of Africa since independence provides a critical service to the general reader -- telling clearly and comprehensively what has happened in Africa since 1960. In so doing, he covers an vast amount of material. There are at present over 50 African states, and they vary enormously, in terms of culture, resources, history, and on and on. Meredith discusses all of the major and most of the minor countries individually, moving forward through time in what is a triumph of organization. If I want in future to review the recent history of one or another African country -- or of some cross-border phenomena -- I shall know where to turn.It is probably too much to expect an explanation at the end of this chronicle. Mr. Meredith's history presents a harrowing account of war after war, dictator after dictator, famine after famine, and mass murder after mass murder. They differ from country to country, of course, but the pattern of kleptocracy combined with monomania emerges again and again. At the end, one has to wonder why, and Mr. Meredith does not really present many answers. It may not be possible to do so, but I wish he had tried.Upon finishing this book, I went back to Amazon to see if there is another on the same topic -- is Africa's history since independence really so totally hopeless? I didn't find anything of anything like Mr. Meredith's level of seriousness that presented a less pessimistic view, at least not based on writeups and reviews. For now, I remain stunned, and curious.

Mr. Meredith does a remarkably good job of covering more than 50 years of history for an entire continent in very a readable, if sobering, book. It’s not a work of political science. He’s not interested in assessing big-picture explanations for Africa’s problems, such class struggle, or neocolonialism, or economics, or ethnic divisions, or anything else. But he’s able to recount the actual stories of African independence. He doesn’t gloss over the diversity of experience in Africa, and details the different histories of different countries, while also covering the challenges that have faced whole regions or the whole continent. About a good a job as I could imagine anyone doing with this subject matter.

Martin Meredith's "The Fate of Africa" is an extensively researched 700 page tome that takes the reader throughout the African continent in the fifty years since independence from the Europeans who colonized them. There are many commonalities among the many countries covered throughout the book such as: hastily drawn and arbitrary European colonial borders, lack of preparation for post-colonial governance, a group of nationalistic leaders who morphed into autocratic leaders more concerned with power and enriching themselves and a narrow band of cronies at the expense of the state and the people. In this way, Africa shares a common fate.Readers should not be scared off by the sheer size of the book as Meredith has a writing style that flows easily. The pages just seem to fly by once one dares to dive in. Readers end up engrossed in narratives of the great hope of independence following colonization, and the disillusionment that often followed with: personality cults, weak economies, war, autocratic states with weak institutions etc. While rulers got rich, the average African was left to a most dismal fate: struggling to survive.Weighty, but worth the time, if one wants to begin to understand Africa.

Well researched, well written, and well worth reading. The author has done an outstanding job of completely bringing you up to date on the sorry state of most of the countries that make up Africa. And the picture he paints, while fair, is less than a pretty one.

As you may have surmised, not only am I one of countless thousands of fans of Sandford's Prey series, but I've been rereading them all. And since my memory for details isn't that great, I am enjoying them almost as much as the first time. I think what makes his books so popular and unique is his use of humor, even within the most dire of circumstances. I must admit that Harry Bosch, Michael Connelly's answer to Lucas Davenport, was once my favorite detective. But as I have been immersed in the Prey books, I realize that Sandford's use of "comic relief" is pure genius. The repartee between Lucas and Sloan or Dell or Weather has often made me laugh out loud or, at least, chuckle. I believe that along with an exciting plot, great characterization, and that final down to the wire finish, the fact that Sandford can wrap it all up with a lighter touch when needed, is what separates him from the rest. I'm looking forward to seeing Lucas become a grandfather. Wouldn't that be a hoot! And here's hoping it will happen in the very near future.

Just finished this book & it ended really great!! Other than that, it wasn't quite as good as some of Mr. Sandfords other stories. The protagonists were good, as usual, however there wasn't nearly enough people other than Lucas & Del. I like the stories that have a lot of the regular people in Lucas's bunch. This book isn't new so maybe the author hasn't invented many of them yet. I knew the minute I read her name that Letty would be going home with Lucas but I didn't remember very much of the story. The antagonists were dull & that is unusual & was part of the reason that it was "not quite as good". The end was not really a surprise due to what had happened just a little bit earlier but it was exceptionally good. I am rereading the Prey books from about midway through the series & they are just as good or better the second time around.

I am an ardent John Sandford fan. I recently purchased and read the complete Prey series and then the complete Flowers series in order, and I'm only sorry I'll have to wait for the next book in both series. Sandford is a novelist with the rare ability to carry over characters and plot elements with complete believabiity while allowing both to develop in interesting, unexpected but natural ways - the only other "serial" novelist who does this nearly as well is Anthony Trollope, and he avoids murders. I re-read these books with pleasure as great or greater than the first reading because the fast-paced narrative and unexpected plot developments pulls you to read fast the first time; the second or third you can pay attention to atmosphere (he's great on significant landscape detail), character growth, and situation development. Sandford writes like a real novelist, not like someone trying to impress academia with his literary exclusivity.

Another good one in the Prey series from Sanford, which explains the introduction of his adopted daughter. (For those who haven't read the books in order, like me.) Why am I asked for reviews so long after I finished the book and have read 4 others?..Anywhooo, not one of Sanford's more gruesome stories. It centers around a small Minnesota prairie town...during the winter, of course. A hanging takes place which involves a mixed race couple. The press descends looking for blood with a character along the lines of a certain msnbc commentator who currently spends a lot of time at the White House and in the St. Loius area. Davenport is asked to solve the crime with Del before a media sh!tstorm. As Davenport works on the case, linked crimes become uncovered, leading to more murders. Another satisfying read from Sanford.

I first picked up a John Sandford novel by chance in a doctor's office when I'd forgotten my book. There was a stack of books in the corner and I picked up several, reading the first few sentences of each . . . . . I chose one by John Sandford which had a first paragraph that I couldn't put down. It was one of his Virgil Flowers books (this current order is one is from his Lucas Davenport series). I've read most of Sandford's books in both series and always keep one in the car in case I find myself somewhere needing a book to read. If you like crime stories, I recommend these.

This was a very good mystery with three different crimes going on intermixed with each other. This is the background story on where Letty, Lucas' adopted daughter came from. The story is very real on what could happen in rural America. A must read Patterson mystery.

I have ordered about 28 Sandford books and can't seem to get themin order,I was listeing to Wicked Prey and woundered where the daughter camefrom ? I asked another fan of the Sandford prey books, and she said Ineed to get Naked Prey. I did and wish I had listened to it first.I am an auditor and on the road a lot and go trouugh a couple of booksa week,I have noticed some old books of his are listed as audio and youget a Cassett thinking you are going to get a CD,them some state Cd or Cassettyou have to watch this, fortunately for me my car has both.I am trying to get some of myfavorite cassetts into CD, Like Mortal Prey the best, but I had to get it in the abridgedand my casssett was the unabridged version both great, some body should market this to Sandfordget his old ones up to date, people would love to have them on CD like Devil's Codewinter Prey,Certian Prey,Night Crew, and Secret Prey. Amazons used books have saved me a lotof money,Thank you very much, and thats all I have to say about that ha Forest would sayold favorite Cassetts

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend in our small group at our church. I had been lamenting the difficulties of adjusting to life with a newly minted teenager and she pressed this book into my hands. Even though the book is targeted more to parents with young children she assured me it would help. She was right. As a modern day parent I have read a lot of parenting books and articles, looking for both guidance and validation of my choices as a parent. I can honestly say that no single book or article has influenced me as much as this one has. While I am and will always be a work in progress, I think this book did mark a sea change in the way I act as a parent and how I view my children. This book is written for Christian parents and it was the Christian perspective that I found most helpful, but that does not mean that central message of the book would not be helpful to those who do not share the faith. That message is that it’s okay to let go of your quest for perfection as a parent. Cunnion writes “I thought my gift to God was trying to be, act, think and parent perfectly” – but as C.S. Lewis put it, “God doesn’t want something from us. He simply wants us.” When Cunnion finally surrendered to God’s Grace her heart found rest in the glorious truth of 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My Grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Reading that verse I felt something in my heart give way and open to Cunnion’s approach and to God’s message. God loves me in my weakness and I need to trust in that for my own sake and as a parent for the sake of my children. When we let go of that quest for perfection and trust in the boundless love and grace of God everything falls into place. The best way to parent says Cunnion is to open your heart to that grace and to show it to your children. She writes, “knowing that they are fully known and fully loved allows our children to live in the freedom and fullness of God’s unconditional love for them without the burden of perfection, performance or pretending… this is extravagant grace and in experiencing this grace our hearts are captured and transformed.” The book has a lot of concrete ways to demonstrate that grace to our children and to teach them through prayer, scripture and service to the community. Cunnion also has specific chapters on the things that all parents need help with like respect, self-control, kindness, honesty and discipline. It is because of this book that we have instituted daily devotionals with our kids, we have scripture memorization and it gave me the much needed push to find a regular service opportunity for my older kids. We still have work to do to live fully in this message. But it is a relief to know that I do not need to be all things, and that I cannot in fact be all things. This reminder of God’s love for me and for my children is a balm for a weary parent’s heart and it tells me that I am not the only one looking out for their well-being and their future. There is tremendous comfort in his grace for us all.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I appreciate the author's information and candidness. My only regret is that I purchased the kindle edition. I am normally an avid fan of reading electronic copies of texts, but this is the first book I have read in a very long time that I wanted to highlight, dog-ear, and write notes throughout so that I could share is with my husband. I am truly excited to begin changing the climate of my household by extending grace through my parenting.

I loved this book so much. It's so in line with scripture and with how we want to raise our kids. One of my favorite things about it was that, more than other books I've read like Shepherding a Child's Heart, I felt like she gave so many great ideas for practically applying the biblical principals in parenting younger children.I also loved the emphasis on grace and not expecting perfection.Overall I very much recommend this book, especially to anyone with kids in elementary school or younger.

Jeannie offers a groundbreaking gift in her book, Parenting the Wholehearted Child as she offers readers the truth that we don't have to be perfect to let our kids know that they are perfectly loved. She extends grace after grace on every page as she artfully and humorously tells us the story of how accepting God's grace for herself has allowed her to extend grace to her children in a way that lets them taste the freedom that comes from a relationship with Jesus. As a marriage and family therapist, it will be my #1 recommendation. And as a parent, it will be my #1 resource. Enjoy!

I loved the book. It was grace based, Christ centered. What I loved most was the practical aspect in the second half. Would definitely recommend this!!

Thank you so much for writing this book! I can't even begin to describe how much I needed it! I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with the constant fight with kids, disciplining all day everyday, yelling, defeat, cold hearts... Etc. this way of parenting will be life changing.

If you have small children, or older children, this book can be read daily through and through and over again. So thankful to have a resource that helps to put things in perspective and lovingly guide me to parent in a balanceof discipline and GRACE!!!

I have read many books on how to raise children, but this one resonated with me more than any other book I've read before. Each page just oozed with godly wisdom and I just know that what Jeannie Cunnion is saying in this book is the way to go for our family! It is so grace-filled and based on building up trust with the children, which is what I love the most about what Jeannie Cunnion is saying in her book. Wonderful book!

Review

"McKenzie helpfully calls us away from the use of 'revisionist' as a pejorative for history we do not like. History is not received like Scripture. And the history of Thanksgiving was subject to lots of revision over the years, especially in the middle of the 19th century. The Pilgrim story, McKenzie points out, was not culturally convenient prior to and immediately after the Civil war, with the New England connection to the tradition quite strong, abolitionist governors using their Thanksgiving proclamations to decry slavery, and Native Americans not especially respected. . . . McKenzie argues for an alternative, for the practice of history done Christianly. . . . Combining knowledge with humility should be our goal in the study of the past. Refraining from self-flattering moral judgment, we should pursue history as an opportunity for moral reflection, looking to what figures in the past say about their own time, and for all time." (William Thomas Mari, Books Culture, November 2013)"It is no doubt too hopeful to imagine that The First Thanksgiving will change how large numbers of Americans understand the Pilgrims or look upon Thanksgiving. But one can hope that the book makes its way into the hands of a wide range of audiences including Christian college students and faculty, elementary and secondary education teachers, adult Christian education classes, general Christian readers, and even secular university classes interested in an excellent primer on thinking historically. If it does, there is some chance by the time Americans sit down to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving in 2021, more of us will be better equipped to receive well the gifts that historical study can provide, including the feast that our Pilgrim forefathers and mothers offer." (Richard W. Pointer, Christian Scholar's Review, Summer 2014)"Tracy McKenzie has written two books in one. The first may be read for fun and profit by anyone interested in the 'real story' of Thanksgiving. The second is primarily intended to help American Christians think in a Christian manner about our nation's history. There are a host of books that smugly dissect popular 'myths' or 'lies' about American history. Fortunately, this is not one of them. It is true that McKenzie dispels a number of common beliefs about Thanksgiving, but he does so in a winsome, engaging manner." (Mark David Hall, Anglican and Episcopal History, Vol. 88, No. 4)"The First Thanksgiving emphasizes the Pilgrims' firm commitment to God and highlights beliefs today's Christians might disagree with, such as refusing religious tolerance. Throughout the book, McKenzie uses carefully selected biblical scriptures to assure readers that history has a place in Christianity, but Christians must be careful not to place faith in historical figures or America. Instead, they should follow the Pilgrims' lead and strive to make heaven their home. . . . Christians who embrace the strategies used by historians that McKenzie skillfully teaches, may never view the past the same again." (Kaavonia Hinton, ForeWord Magazine, Fall 2013)"McKenzie shows readers how historians arrive at their necessarily limited understanding of the 'real story': by evaluating and analyzing primary sources, by placing sources in context, and by imaginative reconstruction. . . . McKenzie makes his argument with brevity, clarity, and wit." (David Torbett, Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology 69, no. 4)

Review

"If you want to rediscover the 'first Thanksgiving' and learn what difference studying history makes--well, you couldn't do better than reading this one volume. By looking at the Pilgrims afresh, they come alive to remind us 'how we mean to live and do not yet live.'" (Mark Galli, Christianity Today)"McKenzie's book is both an engaging account of New England's first Thanksgiving and an excellent introduction to how to think both critically and constructively about history." (George Marsden, author of A Short Life of Jonathan Edwards)"What makes The First Thanksgiving such a refreshing read is that McKenzie gives fewer pages to debunking folk tales about the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving than he does to inspiring desire for a kind of historical inquiry that enriches human wisdom through moral and spiritual reflection. Warm-hearted, intelligent and wonderfully surprising, this book will be read and appreciated by students and scholars alike, and especially by history lovers interested in what history is and what it is good for." (Lendol Calder, Augustana College)"Tracy McKenzie's clearly written and thoughtfully accessible book should be read with appreciation by a wide audience. It combines solid historical treatment of early American Thanksgivings with a perceptive understanding of historical method in general, and it does so by underscoring the profound Christian stake in history. It is one of those rare books that is perfectly suited for young readers but also of real value to those of us who have been around for a long time." (Mark A. Noll, University of Notre Dame)"As a teacher, I am always on the lookout for brief, well-written models of historical thinking that I can immediately thrust into the hands of undergraduates. I absolutely loved the chapter on why it took Thanksgiving so long to take root. This work models historical thinking with incandescent lucidity." (Sam Wineburg, Stanford University)"Revisionist histories were once the rage, as academics sought recognition by shaking us from deeply and dearly held perceptions of the past with revelations of novel and counter 'facts.' McKenzie works the opposite direction, resurfacing the history we have forgotten regarding one of our most treasured holidays--Thanksgiving--to help reexamine and reinforce our most important convictions regarding faith and culture." (Bryan Chapell, president emeritus, Covenant Seminary)

Robert Tracy McKenzie has not just produced an insightful account of the Pilgrims' feast that challenges our traditions and presuppositions. He's also presenting here a thoughtful philosophy for studying history as a Christian. It was for this philosophy that I read this book. McKenzie outlines the importance a discerning understanding of history has in the lives of everyone within the Body of Christ and then lays out principles and pitfalls one should consider when studying history. History majors should notice some of these principles from scopes and methods of history courses, but McKenzie grounds his approach in Scripture. There is so much that could be quoted from this book, there is so much that needs to be said in our age of sound bites, culture wars, and moral redefinition, when the past is, as McKenzie puts it, ransacked for political ammunition. He argMcues that Christian love extends also to the dead and to use their legacy to our own ends is both unloving and prideful. Instead, he encourages the reader to listen carefully to their voices, keeping in mind the contexts of their own beliefs in their times. There's a lot that can be learned from their experiences, and their differences with our own values challenge us to reflect on why we believe what we believe and even if our modern ideas are even an improvement. This doesn't, of course, mean that the reader is being asked to agree with our ancestors, but to give them a fair hearing and use their story as an opportunity to reflect and to grow.I'm deeply grateful to the author for writing this book and for a lecture he gave on his philosophy of teaching that I found transcribed online. That transcription not only introduced me to the author and led me to find out more about him, but it also moved me to revise my own teaching philosophy as I was applying to teaching positions.

One of the unique aspects about reading about history and the events that shape its narratives is the different perspectives and interpretations that also arise as one looks further to a particular event. Historian Robert Tracy Mckenzie examines the most quintessential holidays celebrated each year for his book The First Thanksgiving: What the Real Story Tells Us About Loving God and Learning From History. Thanksgiving day has been observed as a holiday for over 100 years but does one know exactly the origins and story behind the day? Mckenzie provides great detail in his narrative and sheds light on what became the most romanticized events in history through folklore, art and literature, and historical memory. The legend of Thanksgiving as depicted in early history textbooks dating back as far as the nineteenth century was based on Mayflower Compact and the landing of religious separatists from Leiden, England onto Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts in 1620. However, there has been different perspectives written such as William Bradford’s experiences in 1621 and artist and Bradford’s assistant Edward Winslow’s portrait of the first Thanksgiving that differ from the real-life pilgrims that may not have peacefully sat and gave thanks along side with the Wampanoag Indians. Despite that sentiment McKenzie’s intent of examining this historic day is not to debunk the past but rather to present to readers more insight of how and why the holiday has transcended through time from its early beginnings and has been portrayed in its most identifiable form; as a historian Mckenzie also asserts his Christian faith in the book and uses examples from brief quotes from scriptures from the Bible and parallels it to the past. Mckenzie writes with utmost honesty and with a critical eye of how the past is written and retold through collective memory and subjectivity, and present-day events that have an effect on how history is presented at a particular time and place. Thanksgiving has experienced a transformation from how it was originally portrayed 200 years after 1621, and importantly, stereotyped from the types of foods were actually eaten to the attire that was worn; inaccurately displayed in a Currier and Ives painting in 1876 of pilgrims wearing dark clothing with white collars, silver buckle shoes, and black hat – in actuality they wore bright colors, a red suit and violet cloak. After reading The First Thanksgiving, readers may wonder which story they would prefer the legend that does not appear to be going anytime soon or simply understanding what Mckenzie has presented with much enlightened details. The bottom line, the past is the past, but how one chooses to observe historic holidays such as Thanksgiving – turkey dinner with oysters and scallop shells or a game of football, it is up to the reader.

The First Thanksgiving by McKenzie ostensibly about the Plymouth Colony's 1621 harvest celebration and its effect in creating modern America's annual Thanksgiving celebration, is really three books in one: a examination of what actually happened that led up that harvest celebration, an examination of how it effected what became American life in the centuries that have followed, and showing how real historiography is done, particularly in McKenzie's case, as a Christian who is called to examine the facts, interpret them fairly and perhaps show what they mean for how modern people interact with their own past.It is in this roughly 200 page book's examination of what real historiography really looks like, is where it really shines. If, as some theologians have said, that every person who thinks about God and spiritual things, is a theologian, then McKenzie show how every person who thinks about past events is a historian, and how each person does historiography in understanding and interpreting the past matters greatly. His examination and fair attempt to place these Pilgrims in their context and make them understandable to people today is great because it helps show how foreign they are, and at the same time, makes them accessible. He has done some serious research in work with the original documents and even the later colonial and state Thanksgiving proclamations. By showing how the Pilgrims became a device for later generations to have a historical anchor for an annual reflection for a receding year. For those of us today, he councils and warns against using these events as props, for our own hobby horses, but to treat them fairly, as fallen people struggling to honestly live out a life before their God honestly. This little volume succeeds in doing three things quite well, and interweaving them into a compelling narrative.
