Highly recommended. Thorough, easy to read, loaded with interesting anecdotes. If you’re going to the Nairobi Railroad Museum, read this first.

Personally, I consider this a definitive work on East Africa and an enjoyable read. This should be a "must read" for anyone wanting to spend time anywhere in modern East Africa. This book has been out of print a very long time, but timeless in historical content. I am replacing a copy that was "borrowed" just to have it on the shelf.

Brilliant. I had read it before and to search around to find it again, it being out of print, eventually Amazon found a source in America. A great story of the building of the East African Railway line across Kenya to Uganda. Tales of derring do and man eating lions. The accidental founding of Nairobi in a swamp. They ran out of rail! The crossing of the Rift Valley. How the train was often held up with elephants and rhinos on the line. A wonderful story and all true. Highly recommended.

Book spine was discolored and with a drop mark. The hardback was 'loose'. Looked like it was poorly stored, maybe in the sun to cause discoloration. Have just recd. it and started reading it. Very historical relatively recent history of the East Arfican Railway System. Looking forward to reading it with joy.

It goes to the core of those who were born and brought up there.Humorous historical comprehensive account of the British drive to built the Lunatice Express the Railway System in East Africa.It would be awesome if Hollywood were to make a movie based on this book, as it is replete with storytelling factual material.

It is very worn, but its a hard book to find! So I'm happy to have it! It's a fascinating book!

Absolutely wonderful book. I've visited close to half of the islands of the Caribbean ... as a landlubber, never as a sailor. It is like night and day. As a novice catamaran sailor, the information was invaluable. Great insight about customs, questions to ask the charter company rep about your boot, and a zillion other tidbits of information. I have two vacations already scheduled for the upcoming winter and will read this book again. It is so easy to recommend something this great.

A wonderful book! I am going sailing on a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands and the Grenadines this winter and this book is amazing and very helpfull!

Well written and an enjoyable read. Weaved within the abundance of technical information and "local Caribbean knowledge" are real life examples of all aspects of sailing and chartering. Although focused on chartering the Caribbean, anyone who sails would benefit from this book. Highly recommended.

Have owned our 50 ft cat for over a year now. Ordered and read this book recently on an airline flight. Good information for bareboat charter in the beginning, but wait until later where they talk about important sailing and safety tips.
