It's a superficial look at a complex woman, but given the scarcity of literature on Haydee Santamaria, this thin collection of writings and speeches by and about her is enlightening.

This biography of Cuban revolutionary Haydee Santamaria was my favorite volume of Ocean Press's "Rebel Lives" series. More than any other of them, it best accomplishes the goal of introducing an important and interesting -- even inspiring -- figure who is almost completely unknown to English-speaking audiences.Haydee Santamaria was one of the leaders of the Cuban Revolution of the 1950s, one of only two women to take part in Fidel Castro's ill-fated assault on a government garrison on 26 July 1953. Her brother and fiance both died in the attack, and she herself was jailed. After her release, she rejoined Castro, working undercover for his guerrilla fighters and even travelling to the United States to raise funds and purchase equipment.Following the victory of the revolution on New Year's Day 1959, Santamaria became director of the Casa de las Americas, a cultural institution that supported Latin American art and literature. By focusing on promoting Latin American culture and assisting victims of persecution by military regimes in the region, she had an unambiguously positive role. Unlike other, better known Cuban revolutionaries such as Castro and Che Guevara, she was not tainted by Cuba's development into a single-party state with serious deficiencies in democracy and human rights. After a 13 page introduction, chronology and biographical sketch by editor Betsy Maclean, the remaining 110 pages are divided into two sections of roughly equal length. The first, "Fire", consists of a few long interviews with Santamaria and essays by her, about her role in the Cuban revolution and the Casa de las Americas. The second section, "Light", is filled with a large number of short tributes to her (mostly on the occasion of her death in 1980), including contributions from Juan Almeida, Alejandro Obregon, Silvio Rodriguez, and of course Castro and Che.The image that emerges both from Santamaria's own words and the tributes of her friends and comrades is of a determined, dedicated, profoundly human being, open and kind, but principled and passionate, deeply scarred by tragedy throughout her life, nevertheless continuing on as long as she could. I had never heard of Santamaria before picking up this book, which showed me a truly inspiring figure. By the end I was deeply interested in Maclean's discussion of why "this giant of revolutionary history, this shining example of feminism and internationalism, [has] been relegated to the shadowy corners of Latin American political memory".Recommended for all those who have not yet heard of Haydee Santamaria, especially teachers interested in obtaining primary sources relating to the Cuban revolution.

The Last Boy: Mickey Mantle and the End of America's Childhood, by Jane Leavy

Review

“The Last Boy is something new in the history of the histories of the Mick. It is hard fact, reported by someone greatly skilled at that craft...and presented so that the reader and not the author draws nearly all the conclusions.” (Keith Olberman, The New York Times Book Review)“Every kid growing up in New York in the ‘50s wanted to be Mickey Mantle, including me.... Jane Leavy has captured the hold he had on all of us in this gripping biography.” (Joe Torre, bestselling author and former manager of the New York Yankees)“Leavy shows Mantle at his unfathomable worst and unrecognized best. For even the most ardent Mantleologist, The Last Boy, is an education.” (Time magazine)“This is one of the best sports biographies I have ever read. Beautifully written and thoroughly researched, it reveals with stunning insight both the talents and the demons that drove Mickey Mantle, bringing him to life as never before.” (Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Team of Rivals)“Do not walk—sprint—to the bookstore to get a copy of The Last Boy.” (Boston Globe)“In sharp detail and graceful style, Leavy cuts through the myth and treats us to a rarely known Mantle: more flawed, more human and more likeable. A terrific read.” (Tom Verducci, Co-author of the #1 bestseller The Yankee Years)“The only thing about this book that is better than Jane Leavy’s vivid prose is her astonishing reporting. To my knowledge, no one has ever investigated the life of an American athlete with Leavy’s rigor and thoroughness.” (Daniel Okrent, author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition and Nine Innings)“The Last Boy is stunning. Jane Leavy captures the beautiful, imperfect Mickey Mantle with equal measures of depth and empathy. She finds the buried answers to the riddle of what drove and haunted the Mick.” (David Maraniss, author of Clemente and Lombardi: When Pride Still Mattered)“Definitive.” (Sports Illustrated)“Engrossing.… The Last Boy is a fresh, thorough examination of Mickey Mantle’s life.” (New York Newsday)

A New York Times Notable Book of the YearA Time Magazine Top Ten Book of the YearJane Leavy, the acclaimed author of the New York Times bestseller Sandy Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy, returns with a biography of an American original: number 7, Mickey Mantle. Meticulously reported and elegantly written, The Last Boy is a baseball tapestry that weaves together episodes from the author’s weekend with the Mick in Atlantic City, where she interviewed her hero in 1983 after he was banned from baseball, with reminiscences from friends and family. It is the story of a boy from Commerce, Oklahoma, who would lead the Yankees to seven world championships, be voted the American League’s Most Valuable Player three times, win the Triple Crown in 1956, and duel teammate Roger Maris for Babe Ruth’s home run crown in the summer of 1961—a boy who would never grow up. The Last Boy is an uncommon biography, with literary overtones—not only a portrait of an icon but also an investigation of memory itself.

Jane Leavy wrote an excellent biography on Sandy Koufax in the mid-2000's. Here, she tackles the life of her boyhood hero. She gives us an unflinching look into Mickey Mantle's life: his nuclear family, his prowess on the athletic fields, his drinking & womanizing, his outstanding relationships with his teammates, his inconsistent performance as a husband & father and his post-career life. All of this has a 1983 interview that Leavy conducted with Mantle in Atlantic City in 1983 interwoven through the book. She acknowledges that she admired Mantle, yet she is able to come off as objective anyway. Some great quotes:Dr. Hass, the current medical director of the NFLPA after he looked at Mantle's xrays and charts and saw that he played with a torn ACL: "Mickey Mantle can be classified as a neuromuscular genius, one of the select few who are so well wired that they are able to compensate for severe injuries like this and still perform at the highest levels, overcoming a particular impairment at any given moment. It is a phenomenon comprised of motivation, high pain threshold, strength, reflexes and luck." (111)Mantle once said that (Billy) Martin was the only guy he knew who could "hear someone give him the finger." (180)Mrs Mickey Mantle, envied for the presumed benefits of being married to a baseball demigod, was often miserable. Her life was equal parts glamour and loneliness, comfort and emotional deprivation. (216)He was a great storyteller and the fall guy of his best tales. (239)I can't write about what he wrote on the Yankee questionnaire in 1973, but it is on page 300.

Leavy is a former sportswriter who has love and understanding of baseball that comes through as she writes about Micky Mantle. She describes him as tragic hero - so gifted, so flawed, so damaged, so beautiful. His traumatic knee injury occured just seven months into his major league career. His death from alcohol-related cancer only 18 months after hard-earned sobriety. He did not have much time to be at his very best. Her writing is beautiful, the story (even though we all know how it ends) is captivating. I enjoyed it.The book includes 22 photos and 8 magazine covers.Ali Julia review

I feel that Jane Leavy certainly did plenty of research and organization for this biography of Mickey Mantle. I enjoyed the way his life was presented, intertwined with her own interview of Mantle.I would guess that this book would not be appreciated by most Yankee fans as much of it consists of the tearing down of one of their heroes. Then again, it tells of his gentle or sensitive side as well. I must say that if "The Mick" was my favorite player, I would not like this book, as much of the negative information was not necessarily known to the masses.Willie Mays was my baseball hero and there have been numerous books about him, most mentioning his flaws, but they were so minor compared to this exhaustive, mostly negative narrative about Mickey Mantle. That said, it was well done.Danny G.PS--even though Mantle told Duke Snider and Willie Mays that Willie was the best of the three, Jane Leavy does go on to prove that Mickey was better.

14 CDs! oof! But really great. Listened to it driving to Spring Training.Mick was never a hero to me. I admired him as a ballplayer, not so much as a human being. The book showed me that he was not his own creation. I admire his honesty and humility that I never saw before; and the totally beyond comprehension courage that it took him to play for almost all his career in abject pain that would flatten any of us.I'm an old guy and remember all the players of the time, and it was just so cool to hear their names again.Theres a lot of locker room stuff that is hilarious, some sadness and tears, and a lot of cheers for the MICK. I understand him so much better now and I do admire him. And you do need to listen to (or read) all of it

Mickey Mantle is an American success story. A poor country boy, he captured the heart of the country's biggest city and became a hero to much of a generation. He was talented and was a nice guy. But those talents and that niceness were also part of a tragedy.Injuries and debauchery prevented Mantle from realizing his full potential. Perhaps he suffered from a disease, either genetic or caused by early exposure to lead and other mining wastes. He was a heavy drinker and a womanizer, as well, and never comfortable in the role of hero, despite his talent and achievements. At the heart of his failures was Mantle's sincere belief that would die early.Jane Leavy as a biographer does what Plutarch prescribed: she searches throughout the book for signs of Mickey Mantle's soul. His obedience but resentment of his father, his callousness toward his wife, his negative feelings for Joe DiMaggio, his attempts to please and his simultaneous disregard for Casey Stengel, his leadership and his reluctance to be a team lead, his talent and his uneasiness with being treated like a star--Mantle's life was a parade from one contradiction to another. One theory about Mantle's frequent injuries was that while his muscles were powerful, his connecting tissue--tendons, ligaments, cartilage--were only normal and could not withstand the strain of being stretched constantly. Consequently, Mantle's performance suffered because he was almost chronically injured and in pain. Perhaps there was a similar mismatch between his talent and his character. He did not seek or want the attention and the responsibility that often accompanies the ability to achieve on a high levels.Mantle tried to deal with contradictions much like the characters in the Great Gatsby--with a perpetual party. He drank and caroused. Leavy provides many examples of how his off field activities DID NOT adversely affect his playing, a litany of hang over home runs. But ultimately Mantle's life is a sad story. No, Mickey Mantle's life is not a cautionary tale about the dangers of partying. His tragedy was that he was never prepared for his own talent. Leavy describes this tragedy skillfully.

“[Isabel’s] tonic is the example Edward sets of active engagement with the world and its delights, food being chief among them. Who wouldn’t swoon over his dinners? . . . The story of their attachment unfolds like a genial dinner party where the food goes deep and the host sets a buoyant tone.” —The New York Times Book Review “Isabel Vincent delves deeply into matters of the kitchen and the heart with equal and unabashed passion . . . Rich with description of meals savored, losses grieved, and moments cherished, it’s at once tender, revealing, and utterly enchanting!” —Gail Simmons, judge on Bravo’s Top Chef and author of Talking with My Mouth Full “[A] sweet memoir. With each roasted chicken and apple galette, Edward teaches Vincent not only how to cook, but how to savor life.”—RealSimple.com “Life‑affirming, with no soppy sentiment. We all should have an Edward . . . [Vincent] does share a few of his cooking secrets. The one for flawless scrambled eggs (I tried it, with great success) is alone worth the price of the book.”—Toronto Star “Although the food (I am partial to the roast chicken, lovingly described) is excellent, it is the charming and effortlessly wise company that makes this sweet read a charming way to pass a day.” —George Hodgman, New York Times bestselling author of Bettyville   “This is a book full of life lessons, a reminder that no matter how old we grow, we still have much to share, and to learn.”—Library Journal   “Delightfully combining the warm‑heartedness of Tuesdays with Morrie with the sensual splendor of Julie and Julia. This is a memoir to treasure.” —Booklist, starred review   “Food lovers will swoon from the first chapter . . . Hard to know how to rate this book because on some levels I loved, and on other levels I dispised it. I loved most of the writing, and am always a sucker for good food writing. I also loved the premise of the story of how a middle-aged woman in crisis met and formed a mutually beneficial bond with a 92-year old widower also in crisis after having lost his wife of more than six decades. What I really did NOT like about this book was that it was clearly the story of a lonely, miserable and tormented middle-aged woman about to and going through a divorce who formed what seemed to be a profound bond with a very gentle and kindly elderly man but who, as she got her bearings, gradually dumped him. Initially she lives near him and there is lots of contact. Then she moves further away as she is getting her life together, and she admits that she started to neglect him. Lastly, she falls in love with a new man, and again she is pretty honest that she then hardly had any time for elderly Edward. To me the most painful was when Edward fell and was bed-ridden for months, and she does not even go to see him. While there was considerable charm to this book, I have known too many people who used others in this way, the supposedly deep friendship when they are need, only to fizzle out when the person is no longer hurting. This left a very bad taste for me.

Not sure how to review this book . It was pretty awful . It was nothing like the reviews I read before purchasing . Edward simply is not a realistic depiction of a man . He's a romantised version of some woman's fantasy . He writes poetry , cooks seemingly gourmet meals , he was a welder and can recover an antique couch at 93 years of age ? Which reminds me the female character who's name I cant remember ( does she have one ?) tells a story about a antique sofa of hers which adds nothing to the story . Did I just read a modern romance story ? A waste of time and money . Silly though one top review stated she had issues with the book because the female character abandoned Edward at the end of the story . This simply isn't true . Again I just wasted a day of my life . I feel like I vanished into a parallel universe of absolute lameness .

Took a bit to get into but by the end I couldn't put it down. Beautifully written, lots wisdom imparted and even some good cooking tips. I read a review that disparaged the younger friend of Edward for abandoning him at the end after she found Mr.Right. I didn't come to that conclusion at all. Edward and his younger friend whose name I didn't see in the book, came together when they most needed each other. Their relationship blossomed and each became less dependent on each other over time. But the platonic love affair never ended and never became less important.

I love this book.. beautiful feast of characters and I love Edward.. I think this book made me a better friend and daughter.. and made the idea of growing older less frightening... knowing it is up to me to reach out to people and surround myself with life. I wish I had the patience or finesse to prepare a meal like Edward.. alas... I will have more parties, drink more wine and cater more.

This is a brief, lovely book about the relationship of a young woman with a ninety-something-year-old man, Edward, who happens to be an excellent chef and listener! I recommend it for the story, the message that age doesn't have to be a barrier to living well and understanding across generations, and the amazing recipes. I wish I had not gotten it on Kindle, as I'd like to have a hard copy of those recipes for my kitchen shelf!

Wow. Mesmerizing from beginning to end. This story was well-written, and vibrant. Once I started, I could not put it down. I read the entire book while en route on a trip, and had it done in roughly three hours. You know the type of book that when you get close to the end, you begin to feel sad, because you don't want the story to end, but you can't put it down? This is THAT book. From the descriptive dinners, to the emotional confessions of both characters and their lives, I just cannot imagine anyone not liking this book.Buy it. Today. You won't regret it.

Loved the way the chapters all started with a menu for dinner. Then proceed to describe cooking said dinner, all the while weaving in the story. Weather you like to cook or not,you will enjoy the story of this sweet friendship.

This was perhaps the best memoir that I have ever read. Once I started I couldn't put the story down. Everyone needs someone like Edward in their life. I encourage you to read this story and then strengthen your own connections with the people in your life.

Review

“A little duck does not want to swim . . . The message about trying something new is pretty straightforward, and readers will understand quickly that this is just what the little duck should do.” ―Booklist“Sure to delight any animal lover or reluctant child needing the confidence to try something new . . . A winner for group or one-on-one sharing.” ―School Library Journal“Standing in for any reluctant preschooler faced with a new experience, a duckling goes through stages of irritation at parental urging and then nervousness before finally taking a first plunge…. A childhood triumph portrayed just right. Both the archetypal challenge and the creative collaboration go swimmingly.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review“Water-shy readers will identify with the duckling's quandary, but also, perhaps, with the success it finds after diving in with a splash.” ―Publishers Weekly

This wonderful story about a baby duck being guided by his parents to take a leap of faith and test the waters in order to learn how to swim is an adorable story accompanied by beautiful photos. We run a small rescued animal sanctuary partially financed by families staying on our farm. Often times we have small children who spend the weekend with their parents so we stock their room with books to entertain the youngsters. Swim, Duck, Swim will be a perfect accompaniment to their interaction with our animals by the story of the young duck and his parents.

Last year when my 5 year old niece saw her first line of ducklings paddlingalong following their Mama, she got so excited and started quacking!Getting this book was a natural. It's illustrated with a real duck family... the thing is they are NOT illustrations, but rather amazing, colorful photographs. The quality and sweet expressivenessof the photos is something I've never seen. And then there is the story--what a valuable lesson it is for children. The duck family's adventure is a parable about growing up andovercoming childhood fears. I think when it comes time to learn to swim...she's gonna go like a duck to water.

This is perfect gift for toddler and kids who started to learn how to read. Nature photo of ducks are amazing along the story. Baby/younger kids still can enjoy looking at cute pictures and the story. Plus this will teach kids a good life lesson :-)

What a fun read--just the right amount of text to make a perfect storytime, and so clever that i enjoyed it as much as my pre-school niece and nephew (with an older sister listening in). They now know all the words and "read" along with me. And the images match the text so well that i wonder how they got the ducks to pose for the camera. To top it off, the positive message--encouraging readers to try something new--is so appropriate for this age and is brought home without pressure or moralizing. I have another Lurie/Head book about a squirrel that is also a favorite. More, please.

I gave this to my niece and she loves it. My sister must love it also, because she reads it to her nightly!I was struck by the amazingly candid images of the duck family and the quality of the photography. Actually, I can say that I also read this one cover to cover! This book added to my status as favorite uncle. I would highly recommend it.

Love it. Written by my Sister in law
