My 10 year old girl is so IN LOVE with Warrior Cats. It’s such an amazing read for later elem school and early middle school kids. A perfect transition to the novels, too. She’s on her last trilogy in this manga series, then she’ll be ready for the big novels, which are more for later middle schoolers or more advanced early readers. They do have cat violence, good guys vs bad guys, battles, survival, a concept of a practices faith and ‘heaven’ for warriors, plot twists, and strife, all the good stuff - but NO SEXUAL inappropriateness. It makes her feel, as a good book should. She and her friends are so into these that they play it and pretend it, and she even had a Warrior Cats themed party. I can’t recommend this series enough.

Even though the warrior series is aimed at children; nevertheless, I found the concept of warrior cat clans very intriguing. This 90 page graphic novel (Ravenpaw’s Path: Shattered by Erin Hunter) is the third book I have read of this warrior series. Like any good novel there must be conflict, tragedy, and character development. This book begins on a happy note with Ravenpaw and his best friend Barley waking up in the barn at a farm.They love living with an older couple and the two dogs on the farm. They are free to roam around and there are always plenty of mice to hunt and other prey around for them to eat. The quiet and peaceful life is interrupted when a cat named Willie, along with his mate, Minty who also happens to be expecting kits soon, and three other cats named Snapper, Pounce and Tess ask Ravenpaw if they could come into the barn for a while. They wind up staying long after the kittens are born. Ravenpaw being the gracious and trusting cat hunted and got the visiting cats food during their stay. Barley did not trust the visiting cats, but Ravenpaw was fascinated by the kittens and ignored the warning signs.I never give away too much information when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for the reader. There are some interesting and disturbing twists and turns in this graphic novel and I found this story a compelling read and quickly finished the book. If you are a fan of the warrior series you should check out this page turning graphic novel.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. My 11-year-old son is an avid Warriors fan, and I have been enjoying the series very much as well. We had one of the Warriors Super Edition books with a short Manga section in the back and my son loved that version of the story. It's not really my thing, but he found seeing the cats to be a great new twist on how the stories are being told. Ravenpaw has been his favorite character ever since Into the Wild, so we bought this as his first full manga book. I thought it would be a good way to pass the time on a dreary winter weather day, and it was, sort of. He said he really enjoyed the story, although the scene with chicks being killed was a little intense according to him, but he was finished in less than half an hour. I'm all about buying books and the fact that he loves this series means we're investing some serious money in it with all the books coming out. However, it's a little disappointing to pay the same price for 30 minutes of reading by comparison with the books that at least provide a few days of entertainment. If you've got a Warriors fan in your house, they may really enjoy this format, but beware it will be a quick read.

My 13 year old daughter is addicted to this warrior series. Shes has the whole collection now and cherishes them. She can also use these on her reading test at school for a grade so that is a major plus.

This book is cat crazy. Epic does not even come close to describing how good it is, but I wish that Ravenpaw will one day rejoin ThunderClan, but, I doubt he ever will. If you like Ravenpaw as much as I do, this is the right book for you. If for some reason Ravenpaw is not your favorite character, there is no hope. The book is about Ravenpaw, a Clan cat who had an evil mentor, Tigerclaw, who tried to kill him so he left to the Twolegplace, and lives with his friend, Barley. All is calm untill rogue cats drive them away. It ends with a cliffhanger, making you want to buy the next one. GET. THIS. BOOK.

This series is my 12 year old's ultimate favorite! LOVE LOVE LOVE! She treasures every book and can not wait for the next to be released! Couldn't be happier!

this is the first in a trilogy of warrior mangas that I favor. (then again, I favor all of the mangas!!!)anyway......ravenpaw is a thunderclan apperentice who branches out from the clans because of tigerclaw, (tigerstar)whom supposedly wants to kill him. Ravenpaw now lives on a peaceful farm with his friend, Barley. They have a good life there untill something very suprising happens... (WARNING: SPOILERS)A group of rouges has found their farm and has requested to stay for a while while one of their cats has kits. Ravenpaw warmley welcomes the visitors, but barley sees something suspisis. suspishish. (I HATE SPELLLING!!!!!!) anyway.........barley notices one of the cats trying to teach the young kits a deathlock battle move, and knows that these cats are from....(this may or may not suprise you...) BLOODCLAN!!! soon after, the rouges leave the farm, to find a new life. Ravenpaw and barley are very happy of that. when they are walking along the rafters a few nights later, they are shocked to see THE ROUGES.it turns ito a warzone as the rouges jump down into the chicken coop and kill a lot of poultry. the rouges flee, leaving ravenpaw and barley in the midst of the crime scene. the twolegs catch them, and they run into the rouges and have a battle. the rouges lose the battle, ravenpaw and barley return to the farm and sleep the night. Only to find out that a fire is about to burn the barn to the ground. they flee, walk a really long time and end up at the moonstone. they are met by starclan whom tells them to go to thunderclan and get help.in short....I love this book.XDwcrtf(warrior cats rule the forest!)

Personally, I found this book to be an easy and engaging nonfiction work on the natural history of chocolate. The book is aimed at the young adult (12- to 18-year-old) age group and is a great resource for middle and high school students as well as their teachers. I suspect it will best serve as an excellent companion or extra-credit assignment book for any number of classes focused on history, biology, social studies, economics, health, or geography. At 228 pages, it a bit long for a work aimed at young adults; yet the print is large and it is full of interesting black-and-white images; also the flow of the text is broken up with recipes, curious historical stories, and the like. The question is: will young-adult readers be captivated enough to read this book cover-to-cover without being pushed to do so as part of a class assignment? My guess is no. Most children will not want to read this title on their own for the pure pleasure of reading nonfiction. But this should not be a reason not to purchase this book for a public or school library collection, nor for a teacher not to add the work as a companion text or extra credit book in any number of different academic subjects.The story of chocolate crosses many different disciplines. Not all students are interested in all subjects. In this book, the focus of the subject matter frequently shifts among history, sociology, anthropology, biology, and nutrition. Some readers will find all these subjects fascinating, but others may lose interest at the crossroads between two very different academic treatments of the same story and put the book down because they’ve lost interest. That’s always the challenge when an author attempts to interpret the world through the study of one particularly fascinating, but narrow, aspect…in this case chocolate.However, if a child’s love for chocolate can serve as the impetus behind him or her choosing to read this book, then I think it serves a very good purpose. The book nicely demonstrates how one particular thing (in this case a newly discovered seed pod of a new fruit from the tropics) can have a profound impact on the history of the world, an impact far beyond any that anyone could ever have dreamed from the beginning. Young adults need to understand this lesson. This phenomenon is happening at an accelerated rate all around them in today’s modern world through the exponential growth of technology and science.I enjoyed this book quite a lot, but did find myself skimming parts. At times, the book read like a textbook. At other times, there were charming stories. Some sections seemed to get bogged down in too much detail. But I stuck with the book and finished it…and I’m glad I did.Chocolate is a sizable and complex topic. It’s obvious the author fell in love with her topic and wanted to cover as much as she could. In my estimation, she did a very good job of narrowing down the material to what might best appeal to young adults. In addition, she was able to write about this topic in prose that, while aimed at young adults, still respected their ability to deal with challenging ideas and complex sentence structure.It’s too bad the illustrations were done on matte paper rather than glossy paper, but doing otherwise would have made this book unnecessarily expensive.Public and school libraries should definitely purchase this book. And teachers across many disciplines should not hesitate to add this to a list of suggested additional reading tiles for their class.

I was so inspired after reading the book Chocolate Sweet Science & Dark Secrets that I went out and bought my own cacao trees (well seedlings really). I am now in the process of building my own mini rainforest, and in six or seven years I'll be able to make my own chocolate!Anyway, Ms Frydenborg's book on chocolate is really enlightening and thought provoking. I think it is aimed at YA's, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Almost every topic related to chocolate is covered. The subject matter is handled chronologically starting with the first civilizations to use and cultivate the cacao trees. From the Olmecs, to the Maya, the Aztecs and Incas. The author shows how the cacao was revered by the Mesoamericans and how the beans were used as currency, food, and in religions ceremonies including human sacrifice. Next in the time line comes the invasions of the Spanish & Portuguese and the migrations of chocolate to Europe. The decimation of the native population of central and South American is covered along with the slave trade. Next the author covers the industrialization of cacao that transformed the bitter Mesoamerican drink into the chocolate bars of today. Chocolate makers Hanau & Baker, Nestle, Lindt, Hershery are also included. From here the time line moves to current day and to environmental issues and how the loss of the Amazon rainforests is jeopardizing the future of the cacao tree and of chocolate industry itself. The author talks about how various groups are promoting sustainable farming, organic growing, and living wages for the workers. How scientist are mapping the DNA of the different varieties of cacao trees, and how they are hunting for and cataloging the elusive native trees in the hopes of reintroducing the hardy, disease resistant varieties into declining groves of commercial trees.This book on chocolate includes many diverse topics, but all the topics are woven in an interesting and easy to read story. In the end all the different parts combine to tells the amazing story of chocolate. I will never look at a chocolate bar the same way again.

I have not finished reading the book but so far ITS GREAT. The Spanish version sometimes left me clueless because the words were either smudgy or I didn’t understand the word. This English version makes the content super easy to understand and flow. The words kind of invite you to read more. Author did a great job making this version modern and easy to follow.

A beautiful well written English translation, speaks to the essence of the prayers. Highly recommend this version over the original English translation of the Allen Kardec book of prayers

This book deserves a 4 star pushing a 5. And only due to some typo's. I found at least 10 errors or less. Other than that from a person who has only read the Spanish version of Allan Kardec book, I have to say this translated book comes extremely close to the Spanish one. Again, I just don't understand how the errors could have been looked over. The errors are simple fix with a pen or you can write out the error. I recommend this book not the "Yellow English One" that looks similar to the Spanish book. Buy this one instead.

This is one of the more approachable books I have read on this subject. In this book, Dr. Falk starts with a discussion of what Christian theologians throughout history have written about creation, good and evil, and the garden of Eden. The book heavily references writings from Christian scholars including Augustine, Wesley, Lewis, Barth, Bonhoeffer, and others who have written extensively about creation. He also references modern day creationist and intelligent design literature. That said, it is clear that Falk is gently espousing a view of evolutionary creationism, which he calls gradual creation.Falk presents three possibilities for understanding the creation of life's diversity: One, that God created each species from scratch, one species at a time. Two, that God miraculously created several broad kinds of organisms, each of which diversified into many species. Three, God created all species by guiding a gradual process of evolution, without specifying a mechanism for God's guidance. Throughout the remainder of the book, Falk uses several well-illustrated examples to examine the evidence seen in the fossil record and in our genomes to help us understand God's creative activity leading up to mankind. The author ends the book with a chapter on how to approach this topic within the wider body of evangelical Christian believers.

This author bridges away from those fundamentalists who make unsupportable claims about all of creation occurring within a 6 day period less than 7000 years ago. How to work in science based fields and still believe in an omnipotent God is a struggle for many. The theologians who espouse the notion that the original proto-Canaanite Phoenician character based Genesis language supports a strict 6 day creation simply do not have that language around to support that claim. What is key is to be able to encourage a personal relationship to God as Abraham had without being pushed away by theologians insulated from reality by a religious system culture which mandates adherence to their own ideas. I have heard a theologian state that if the 6 day creation less than 7000 years ago is rejected, one is incapable of believing in God. However, he is willing to believe that God would deceive us by sending us light from stars that are millions of light years away as measured by physics that have not ever been challenged.This author also seems to address scripture as inerrant in intent but not always in construct. Clear to many is that Biblical history is made by imperfect men, even those inspired to produce the supreme art that is scripture. Its awesomeness art is not to be the focus but rather the underlying messages, the key one of which is that God loves mankind, each of us individually and our foremost duty is to love Him back. If we can establish that relationship, if we can live within it, life would be better for the vast majority of us.In summary, this author nicely relates his reasoning past this dilemma that many of us face and in that way, makes faith available to many who would throw out faith otherwise because of well meaning but errant theologians.

This book contains lots of fascinating science that if you grew up in an Evangelical environment you probably have not been exposed to. (A lot of it is fairly recent research too, so if it has been a decade or so since your last science class, you might not have heard a lot of this stuff, even in a secular environment.) The theological questions were handled gracefully and without the condescending arrogance that is so typical when origins questions are debated, though nothing was treated with much depth. At times it felt like the author went a little overboard on the narrative and talking around the issues, but I guess that is understandable if you are trying to actually be sensitive to people who disagree. The book makes a fine case for widening the Evangelical tent to include those who cannot swallow some of the more literal Genesis interpretations, but it does not claim that those Christians who do believe them without cognitive dissonance should have to change. I would definitely hand this book to any high schooler or college student who was wondering about the compatibility of faith and science or who was too quick to dismiss as heretical a Christian who accepted "evolutionary creation" as a viable belief.One complaint: I have the Kindle version and if a footnote had a quotation in it, it showed up blank. There were a lot of footnotes affected by this, and it was annoying and disappointing. I hope the publisher gets on the task of fixing it.

I received the book within a few days of my order. It was in excellent condition. I was very pleased with the content. The author answered some of the vital questions that I had, and shared his point of view in a non-dogmatic fashion. Perhaps he was too "wordy" in the final chapters, but that's a minor imperfection, when considering the work as a whole. I would recommend both the book and the supplier from whom I obtained it to any evangelical Christian from a conservative background who has become dissatisfied with opinions on matters of science and how it properly relates to faith that are exclusively one-sided.

Very interesting and thought provoking. Many Christians accept evolutionary process in the creation of the world and mankind,but Dr. Falk does not address God's experimentation in the formation of modern man. Such a discussion would be very interesting. A very good read packed with scientific data that can be understood by those without a science background. The dating of fossils and discussion of genes and was excellent.
