The Washington Post says, “The map guide lets you be inconspicuous: it’s as small and light as a novella, and its flip-out maps could pass as a flyer to a cool club.”“Make sure you never lose your way in a strange city. Each of the Knopf MapGuides captures its city’s pith in a package as small as a passport wallet…”– Real Simple“Knopf MapGuides are handy, practical and perfect for those of us who are slightly impaired when it comes to map-reading. You don’t have to search a huge crackling sheet with a microscopic index for one of 10,000 dots on the map…The extraordinary quality of the books’ beautiful hues and heavy paper also give these $8.95 guides an evocative quality that stands apart from the glossy, garish look of most travel books.” – Marin Independent Journal“A good, handy portable item for a quick trip” – San Francisco Chronicle“We love Knopf’s smart new map guides.” – Travel & Leisure

These Mapguides are great and very useful to bring along on your travels--very compact with fold out maps that you can easily consult as you see the sights. Had I actually received the 2017 edition I would have given it 5 stars. I took off 2 stars because I ordered a used copy on this page--2017 edition--but received the 2007 edition. This is not really the bookseller's fault because the ISBN is the same for both editions, published 10 years apart. This is misleading on the part of Knopf and a violation of ISBN rules. I did not get what I was expecting but the seller, based on the ISBN, sent me what they thought I had ordered. There is no way to make either of us "whole." So, if you decide to purchase a used copy, verify with the seller, before ordering, what you are getting. Knopf Mapguides: Rome: The City in Section-by-Section MapsI have attached photos of the front and back of the book I received.

This is a TERRIFIC little pocket guide, once you've decided what you want to see. There are brief lists of the 'top ten' sights, and information on lodging and transportation, including a subway map. Where this excels is with the maps. For each of six major areas of the city, you open the guide to descriptions of the restaurants, bars, and shopping in the area. The pages feel very thick, almost like you're reading a young child's cardboard book. But like magic, the pages unfold UP, not from side to side, so you're looking at a double-page map that takes up roughly 3/4 of the page, with the bottom section highlighting the tourist attractions (museums, churches, palaces, theaters, piazzas) in the area -- brief descriptions, addresses, hours, phone numbers, and color photographs. The index lists several hundred sites you may want to visit, and references them back to the appropriate map. They have been incredibly efficient in cramming so much information into such a compact design. Very well done!

What I love about these guides is that you can open up a small map of a section of the city and not have a cumbersome huge map to deal with. All the sights, details, restaurant suggestions, right there for the area in which you are wandering around

Really easy to use and great maps. We went to some of the recommended restaurant locations that are a bit hidden. WOW ..... some terrific recommendations. Pizza - Da Baffetto (really, it gets busy quickly). Trastevere - Da Enzo (Maybe the best carbonara I have ever had). This place is a little hard to find. And it was full by the time we got there. However, they set up a little table inside. A bit of a tight fit, but we really enjoyed the evening because of the ambiance and great food. By the way, the pistachio gelato is THE best I have ever had anywhere.

I can't get enough of the Knopf books. They're great for planning because they're sorted by neighborhood. So you can mark your hotel on the pages and then map nearby restaurants and sites. I usually start with Google maps but then organize everything in the book. They're also a sweet souvenir to keep in a stack with the other Knopf books from other trips.

We bought the Venice version and liked that one so when we went to Rome, we purchased this guide. There is just enough background on Rome's public transit system, with routes, as well as information on the airport and other practical background. The bulk of guide consists of foldout maps with the city divided into several sections. Each map has an associated notes on museums, monuments, and other destinations found in that area, each of which can be located by the letter-number section. The next page highlights shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes in the area. This approach breaks up the city into more manageable bites. The foldout maps are easier to open and close so one can spend less time looking like a lost tourist. And when in Rome, try to visit Ostia Antica; it's only a 30-minute ride from Rome.

I have at least 5 of these Knopf books. They fit easily into purses and large pockets and the area by area fold out maps help you avoid the giant unfolded map situation. I like it for identifying sights and providing a good map, but sometimes the restaurants/bars are gone, the hours might be wrong, and Knopf doesn't include the prices for sights. So you might see a museum and want to go, and when you show up it's $$$ and you might change your mind. It's a great supplement and worth it for the map convenience.

I had checked out a book from the local library and liked it so much I came on amazon to buy that book, Fodor's Rome's 25 Best, 6th Edition (25 Best). Amazon then recommended this book to me and after looking it over decided to give it a try.My wife and I went on a 12 day cruise of the Med and ended that we 3 days in Rome right before Thanksgiving 2006 (Nov. 2006). This book more than paid for itself with all of the helpful reviews in it and suggestions. But the topper for me was the quality and size of the maps. We looked enough like tourists in the city, but this little book and it's fold out maps helped us look a little less so. They were more than details enough, and having suggestions on them we found a wonderful place to eat one night, it was great. If you want something that is small and compact, yet still provides great details in terms of maps of a city this is the book for you. And there is no huge map to fold and unfold as you walk around a city. This book breaks the city in to sections and based on where you are you have only a small map to easily unfold and use.I highly recommend this book.

The Wealth of a Nation: A History of Trade Politics in America

Review

"Johnson, who worked as a trade official in president Bill Clinton's administration and then as a lawyer, set out to chronicle the central role trade politics have always played in the United States. He largely succeeds...with the Trump administration starting trade wars and bringing protectionism back, the book couldn't be timelier."--Foreign Policy"Densely detailed study of trade agreements across the span of American history, written by a former U.S. trade representative...[F]or students of international trade, macroeconomics, and governance-another theme is the struggle among various branches of government to regulates foreign trade-this will be a useful reference....Timely..."--Kirkus"Johnson provides reassuring evidence that the country's current politico-economic climate is not unique, or even new, reminding readers that trade debates date to the founding fathers, as do protectionist movements....This thoughtful, eloquent history also doubles as a plea for improved public understanding of a vital issue."--Publishers Weekly"Don Johnson has used his talents and vast experiences representing our nation to achieve an important historical study of trade policy. There are many perspectives on the lessons to be learned from that history, and it is vital that we debate those differences as we confront the challenges of globalization."--Sander Levin, U.S. Congressman of Michigan and former Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee"This splendid book covers the politics of American trade policy from the country's beginnings through Trump. Johnson provides a great overview of a fascinating subject."--Douglas Irwin, John French Professor of Economics, Dartmouth College, and author of Clashing over Commerce: A History of US Trade Policy"Johnson offers numerous biographical sketches and a readable historical narrative with an increasing focus on movements, legal battles, and political pressure groups as he moves toward the present. Readers looking for current topics will take interest in his detailed discussion of labor issues as a central concern of trade politics in the late 20th and early 21st centuries and the attempts by pro-trade politicians to satisfy the interests of an anti-trade labor movement."--J. Gerber, emeritus, San Diego State University, CHOICE"An unabashed believer in economic liberalism, C. Don Johnson warns us of the dangers of Donald Trump's protectionist policies. By exploring the history of protectionism since the nation's founding, the rise of the modern-day liberal order, and its potential demise under Trump, this former congressman, trade negotiator, and lawyer lays out a story designed to reach a wide audience."--Thomas Zeiler, The Historian

I am an Electrical Engineer, not an Economist. My depth of knowledge ends with “ decreasing marginal utility”. After finishing this book (600+ pages) I understand the Trade issues on the nightly news a little better. I never considered Trade Politics as an interesting subject but was incorrect in that assumption. The author spent a great deal of time explaining and detailing trade history basically beginning with the founding of our country. This is especially interesting if you've read the history of Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton or any of the Founding Fathers. He then takes us thru the depression with Roosevelt and up to the present with Trump. After reading this book, with the Trade perspective, I now feel like I know "The rest of the Story".

This is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the moment of history we're living in right now. It's not just about trade and tariffs, but really all of U.S. history, in times of war and peace. It's sweeping, from Adam Smith and Alexander Hamilton through Steve Bannon and Donald Trump. Very interesting with funny anecdotes from history and from the author's own experience as a leader on these issues.

The author does a reasonably thorough job of detailing our countries history of trade. Our early leaders were divided; the south wanted little or no tariffs or duties but the north used tariffs to protect our growing industrial base. Our nation’s history has been formed by a this debate. In the author’s introduction he focuses on Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. Published in 1776 Smith’s work extols the virtues of free trade wherein all of society benefits when every producer is free to maximize their own individual economic freedom. The author included in his introduction the four situations Smith offers where government and industry should cooperate in the form of protection: protect an industry needed for national defense, impose a tax on a foreign import when a domestic tax is imposed upon a similar product of the home industry, impose a tariff on foreign imports in response to the competition, and finally trade restrictions should be removed gradually to allow fledgling enterprises to keep pace. What fascinates me is that all four of Adam Smith’s situations to support the public good are used today by president Trump to justify his negotiations with global trading partners for fair trade. The author dislikes Trump and makes no effort to disguise that fact. I suggest the reader reread pages 18 and 19 again before reading the conclusion. Like me, I suspect the reader will easily identify the inconsistency.

The author who is allegedly expert enough to author a book on American Trade Politics, ignores the significant improvement in the US economy since Donald Trump has been President. He is more of a left wing ideologue than an economist . He is very biased against Trump. He criticizes Trump's effort's to reduce the trade deficits the US has with other nations especially China. He also ignores the economic advantages that would accrue to the US if there was control of our southern border. No one criticizes Mexico or any other country which controls who enters their country. But the author who clearly lets his hostility to Trump interfere with economic logic is against adequate border control. He criticizes any effort by Trump to reduce trade deficits with Mexico or other countries which have surpluses in trade with US. Don't waste your money. He ignores the lowest unemployment rates for minorities since statistics have been compiled for these groups and the lowest overall unemployment rate in 40 years. You can hear similar nonsense for free on MSNBC and CNN.

This book reads like a novel but is a well documented history of our nation’s trade policies. Mr. Johnson hasn’t just put facts together he has told a fascinating story. Never dull.

Although an avid reader, this is my first review of a book. I felt compelled, however, to recommend this history of protectionism and free trade policy. It covers the United States from it’s founding to the present day. At the timing of this review, these issues have received considerable headlines. “The Wealth of a Nation” provided me with a framework for understanding the long debated issues of international trade between sovereign nations. The book is readable and my hope is that it reaches a larger audience yearning for effective government within an increasingly connected world.
