This is the first writing from this author I have read. I am very impressed with the way this author writes and how he has constructed this novella (82 pages). It is just long enough to set the scene for the rest of the series and whet our appetite for what is to come. It is a real cliff-hanger having the Rapture occur at the 3/4 mark and leave you hanging at the end wondering what is to come and what happens to the characters that this short sets up. It is constructed so well, that I would suggest any reader to make sure that they have the next book in their possession to read immediately as they will not want to delay finding out what happens next. One thing that struck me reading this novella is the research and application of same that Higgins so masterfully includes and portrays. I have always found that whether you are young or older, learning is always better achieved if it is delivered in a fun way or in such a manner that the participant (in this case, the reader) picks it up easily and therefore its retention is far much more guaranteed than under less fun or favourable conditions. Higgins shines here. His knowledge of American football is superb and is cleverly delivered as a backdrop to this story pre-Rapture and also unifies the relationship between three of the main characters. I know nothing about this particular sport (I live in Australia), but the way Higgins has integrated this into the story as the background setting and as part of the relationship between Justin, Brian and Graig is very enjoyable and I found myself getting interested in this sport!!For a novella, Higgins has created his characters to be very relatable. I found myself very attached to all of them and interested to see how the rapture affects them, (of those that are left behind) and this adds to the cliff-hanger ending I mentioned before. I am intrigued to see how these character's plot lines intersect in the remaining installments of the series. There has been some basic intersection of one character with two others in this installment and I can see that this intersection of characters will add to and strengthen the plot in the remainder of the series. This novella is very biblically based. Higgins outlines his "stand" on eschatology in the "Foreword" (Titled For Your Consideration) and provides a convincing account of why he has taken this stand. I must confess that there are elements in this account that I had not considered before or read elsewhere. He has obviously researched this extensively to arrive at his conclusions and I look forward to seeing these integrated in the rest of the series. Stating whether you are a Pre-Tribulation, Mid-tribulation or Post-Tribulation adherent can be risky as this whole topic of eschatology and specifically the Tribulation period, is one very hot potato within Christian circles. I admire Higgins for outlining his stand in this Foreward and basing his fiction series around this.I found it very refreshing having an evangelistic theme woven into the plot through the character of Justin, being the only witnessing Christian in this story. Other Christian novels either have this type of theme weakly constructed or somewhere in the background and not very obvious, but Higgins is up front with this. This shows what we as professing Christians need to be like if we are following in the footsteps of Jesus and His Great Commission. Even in real life, Christians who are like Justin can become unrelatable and super-spiritual but Higgins has depicted Justin and his wife as genuine and sincere and very relatable. Listening to Justin and his wife, Heather, discuss how to talk to others about the Gospel shows us how to witness to our friends and family without being preachy, self-righteous and pious and with them feeling they are condemned and judged to hell without any hope at all. I appreciated Higgins showing this through Justin's behavior towards Brain, which reinforces that we are to be doers of the Word and not just hearers of same. I loved the Spirit having the occasional words of caution and encouragement when Justin was discerning when and how to talk to Brian about Jesus.I am always intrigued how Christian authors portray the Rapture. Do they have a gradual build up then just as suddenly as we expect it to happen in real life, it occurs and catches the reader off guard, or is it too predictable? In this novel, I knew it was to happen during the football game as outlined in the book description so I was on tenterhooks reading the game-play description and yes, I was caught off guard, which pleased me immensely as this is just how I like it. Higgins' description of the First Family's confusion, shock, horror, panic, despair, grief at losing some members of their family and the same of the population in and around the football stadium and of those in New York where Tamika is situated, is very realistic and emotion provoking. Definitely adds to the action and suspense of this scenario. Higgins has constructed this well and I am looking forward to seeing this continue in the next installment.I am glad Patrick Higgins submitted this book to me for review. Despite him offering to send me a PDF copy, I did not mind spending the $0.99 cents to buy it. More than money well spent. I have been spiritually encouraged, challenged and entertained immensely in this novella. I do look forward to reading the rest of this series and his other novels. I applaud him for making his fiction spiritually and biblically based and not afraid to show the Gospel of Christ in his plot and characters.Highly Recommended.

This novel and series has probably the best researched and biblical understanding of what will happen after the taking out of Christians from this world. It holds nothing back or sugar coats or sensationalizes this occurrence.it goes further than the" left behind series"It shows a step back and observe on personal basis people we can identify with. Not just those that are untrue to spouses:but common everyday families and how they react in situations of losing grandparents, children, and friends. All this before the dreaded "Mark"of which I'm inclined to believe is not threatened but people desire it.I have followed this series and will continue as long the novel continues blending premises with scripture.

This thin book begins with information pertinent to the story that follows. The author presents a few pages of teaching about the Rapture and Bible prophecy followed by a more personal note. I encourage readers not to skip this introduction because it helps set the scene for the novella. This prequel story to his book series captivates and holds your attention. It’s intriguing and interesting to see how the lives of all the characters introduced eventually intertwine. They seem so true to life and their actions and reactions follow suit. He does a good job setting up the scenario, with various people including the US president and his wife left amid the chaos. This may bring to mind the Left Behind series, but this opening tale certainly makes me want to read more and see how this author handles what happens after all the Christians disappear from planet Earth. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

To think that this, as well as, many other books on this topic describes the coming events explicitly. I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for His gift of salvation. I would hate to have to live through the horror that will be occurring on the earth. Please don't let this series, or any you decide to read, pass you by without making the decision to follow Jesus.

The subject material of this book is very appealing however I felt too much text was spent on character description and not enough on who Jesus is, His relationship with characters. Way too much time was spent on Michigan versus Ohio State. I wasn’t looking to read a sports book but a book to draw me closer to the Lord and building my knowledge of what’s to come. I will read more of the books though and hopefully they will be more spiritually enlightening.

This novel probably the best researched of what will happen after the taking out of Christians from this world. It holds nothing back or sugar coats or sensationalizes this occurrence. It goes further than the" left behind series"It shows a step back and observe on personal basis people we can identify with.

Engaging story. I read in 2 sessions. Characters are well built and the writing is pretty decent. Looking forward to reading part two. So far, liking it more than Left Behind.

I was looking forward to a difference from Left Behind so decided to try this Chaos series. But if the rest of the "novels" in this series are as short as #1 was then I'm thinking the cost is not commensurate with what is customary and probably won't read the rest.

I've heard great things about Junie B Jones books so I purchased for my niece. My fault for not reading the description, but its about a girl that didn't get picked to be the flower girl, I thought that was kind of weird to give to our flower girl. Also probably best for school aged children, as I didn't realize it was a chapter book.

Given as gifts for the flower girls in the wedding. Given to them when I asked the parents about their participation. Neither little girl had ever been to a wedding. Both were school age girls.

My niece loves Junie B Jones books, and so I bought her this to ask her to (really) be my flower girl. She loved my question and loved the book.

Cutest ever using this for a flower girl proposal!

These are the cutest books for a flower girl! I think reading is so important so these are perfect. They may have to be read by an adult, but what little girl doesn't love to be read to. I also got Pinkalicious Flower Girl and Daisy Jane, Best-Ever Flower Girl books along with the Barbie Flower N Flutter doll. I think the flower girls will love this basket.

This is a review from my 2nd grade daughter: This book made me happy. It was a nice read, and I knew almost all the words. It also improved my vocabulary. Junie B. wants to be a flower girl at her aunt's wedding. She tries to replace the flower girl but ends up being friends with her. Junie B. then taught the flower girl how to be a lady.Parent's take: my daughter loves reading Junie B. Jones books by herself, and it is a joy to see her do that!

I know my Granddaughter Isabel who I bought this for loves all the Junie B. Jones books She often tells me how much she enjoys them. She has been reading them for about a year mnnow and is a great reader. She turned 8 Dec 22.M.

My granddaughter loves this series of books.she is eight years old and gets very engrossed in each story

If you've read any of Richard Feynman's wonderful autobiographies you may think that a biography of Feynman would be a waste of your time. Wrong! Gleick's Genius is a masterpiece of scientific biography--and an inspiration to anyone in pursuit of their own fulfillment as a person of genius. Deservedly nominated for a National Book Award, underservedly passed over by the committee in the face of tough competition, and very deservedly a book that you must read.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I had no idea I could enjoy reading about physicists and their various personalities and accomplishments. Make no mistake this book is all about Richard Feynman, but Gleick did it in such as way as to make it a mini-history of the development of the field in physics and a mini-who's who of physics during Feynman reign as one of the best of the best. The time line is ever changing, starting at the beginning of his life and forward, then circling back to pick up tidbits from time to time. I swear Gleick's occasional use of formulas and graphs was so skilled I even thought I understood the basics of physics -- not so, but it felt like I could. It's a long book, 500+ pages, and I was never bored. I think I like knowing "about" Feynman. According to Gleick, Feynman's philosophy of life was preferring to "not know the answers" and be looking for them. He wasn't frightened with "not knowing". His words as he lay dying, according to Gleick, will stay with me forever: "I'd hate to die twice. It's so boring."I wondered how Gleick was able to bring so much personal detail into this biography. Then I read his bibliography. Amazing!

After reading Chaos, also by James Gleick, I was curious whether Genius was better written than what I thought of Chaos. Sadly it wasn't.Like in Chaos, I didn't like the way Gleick writes. It's simply too unfocused on the main topic. In Chaos, it seemed more like a collection of stories and biographies and in Genius, it seems like Gleick wasn't interested at all in Feynmann. The book starts off with the events straight after the conclusion of the Manhattan project in which Feynmann contributed. And then moving to Feynmann himself in a chronological order of his life.Throughout the book a few themes are touched upon. How Feynmann is always in the search of mental shortcuts, especially in calculation (this was a time before calculators!), how Feynmann has a more physical intuition towards physics rather than his sometimes more mathematically-driven colleagues, how Feynmann was a genius who doesn't accept the solutions of others but have to work through the problems himself and how he left a lot of groundbreaking works behind because he wasn't interested enough in trying to publish it.Other themes that are less mentioned but still prominent enough are the his love to his first wife Arline and her early death and how that continued to some degree to affect him throughout this life, rivalries and adoration of other scientists and the influence of his father on his special way of thinking. At first glance the book is very thorough but it quickly becomes clear that Gleick perhaps tries to do too much. In his coverage of Feynmann, he really gets into the thinking, the way of working of Feynmann, and his life. Until you realize that it's an external look into his achievements and very little on the person himself. Arline, his first love, must have played a major influence in his life, but Gleick doesn't drill into their relationship enough and try to infer how that could have influenced Feynmann.Gleick doesn't give Feynmann a personality other than that of a man who is searching for the ultimate truth and wanted to see the laws of the universe. Gleick mentions Feynmann being accused of sexism, then uses one recommendation that Feynmann did for a woman, and then excusing it with the fact that at that time it was a boy's club. And then spends an entire subchapter on describing his love life and how he could easily pick up women using so-called tricks.Another point that annoyed me was how Gleick always tried to make Feynmann better than anyone else. Sure, Feynmann was probably more intelligent than most people, but even amongst peers? Gleick takes all of the older generation (Dirac, Bohr, Heisenberg and even Einstein) and depicts them as dinosaurs who did well, but not as well as Feynmann who found even more fundamental truths about the universe. Which is a bit strange, because a scientist should be judged on the time that they lived in and not what came after. Feynmann did after all build on top of the discoveries made by this older generation which Gleick likes to compare to Feynmann. Gleick then tries to make every one of Feynmann's contemporaries either a fan (like Dyson) or a rival who disliked Feynmann because he was smarter than them (Schwinger, Gell-Mann). Which is strange since many of these contemporaries also won Nobel Prizes and did significant work that sometimes was the same as Feynmann's even if Feynmann's work won out in the end because of widespread adoption.Lastly Gleick spends a lot of time trying to explain some of the groundbreaking discoveries but it quickly fails for me since he never explained any of the basics needed to understand this.I would not recommend this biography. Gleick doesn't look into Feynmann as a person but seems content to spend half of the biography discussing physics and the other half on Feynmann's achievements. An unbalanced biography which seems to build into the cult of Feynmann (even the title doesn't really shy away from this). I've read that "Surely you're joking Mr Feynmann" which is written by Feynmann himself as a collection of anecdotes is a worthwhile read. And compared to this book, you might as well read a biased account about Feynmann written by Feynmann himself.

I really wanted to like this book. I have liked other books by the author, and after reading "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman!" I consider Richard Feynman a personal hero. But ultimately I don't feel that this book did him justice, at least to my eyes as a non-physicist lay reader. This quote, about Feynman, appears near the end of the book: "They knew they had a remarkable central figure, a scientist who prided himself not on his achievements in science—these remained deep in the background—but on his ability to see through fraud and pretense and to master everyday life."Yes. This is the Feynman I want to read about. Not about his scientific achievements in all their technical detail, but about his method and approach to science and life. Unfortunately, though, the book is bogged down in long sections of technical abstraction. No doubt these sections are interesting to physicists or physics graduate students, but I'm not one of them.Perhaps this is a great book that simply did not meet my unrealistic expectations for it. But for me, I'd recommend "Surely You're Joking" absolutely without reservation, but this book only to technical readers. "Surely You're Joking" is a book about an interesting character where you learn a bit of science along the way. "Genius" is a book about science where you learn about an interesting man along the way.

I thought it in poor taste that so many of the puzzles contained vulgar words. I thought this was going to be a fun activity to do with my granddaughter. I refused to let her see it due to its content. I will NEVER buy another book by this publisher. You should be ashamed.

Awful book! Full of made up nonsense words and at least for this grandma, many words that shouldn't be in there, especially the Lords name in vain. Definitely written by someone without a good command of the English language or with an awful grandma in their life! Would never buy another book put out by Rays Publishers. Save your money!

These puzzles have no subject and contain many random words like anuses, yes, really! If you read the description on the back of the book like I did once I received it there are typos (attribute instead of a tribute and any one spelled as two words instead of one). I’m sticking to Charles Timmerman, especially his “everything” series, funster, and Jordan Smart. This one is now in the trash boo bye. It's like it was written with a computer program by someone who isn't a native English speaker just going through random words in the dictionary and plugging them in, and many of these words I never even heard of (my vocabulary is decent so I'm surprised how many were foreign to me).

This was a gift for my grandmother who likes to keep busy and keep her mind sharp! Its a great book with lots and lots of large puzzles, i chose this book because they were not just 4 letter words and actually required some brain work to solve. Which she loves. The lettering is a great size for those who have difficulty with small lettering. I looked and looked and this was the best book for my loved one, It was a win!!

Gave this as a “tree stuffer” for Christmas for my Grandma of 80 yrs old and she LOVED it.She got a kick out of it saying it was made for grandmas and the large print and large page sizes made it fun and easy for her to use. During Christmas lunch she already pulled it out and started it.

Just got it. Thumbing through it looks good. I am older and eyes don't work too well, so the large print is excellent. Thank you.

Great Grandmother ...95 years old..loves to do word search...she loved this book!

They are large print. I would prefer the solutions at the rear of the book. All things considered I do like the book and have bought it again.

Carefully read the first half of this book a couple times and you can expect to deeply internalize the most general, enduring principles of analyzing competitive advantage and entry barriers. This book's value is its simplicity. There's nothing groundbreaking here. Greenwald's got no axe to grind, no TED-talk tailored concept to (over) sell. The ratio of insight to fluff is very high, so you'll actually remember what you read.Non-practitioner's won't grasp how valuable a simple, deeply internalized analysis framework is. Researching a company you know nothing about- cracking open a fresh 10-K - can be overwhelming. A simple framework focuses your attention, let's you filter out the noise, and zoom in on the pertinent.Porter's five forces isn't wrong, it's just excessive and distracting. Sure, it's nice for an MBA assignment: go analyze company X on these five dimensions. But if the lesson learned is that equal effort should be expended analyzing "supplier power" as "entry barriers", then the student has been deceived.Scholars love excessive complication. I recall the corporate finance section of the CFA exam, wherein project go/no-go decisions depend on said project's stock market Beta, with calculations carried out to the decimal point. All this "rigor" for calculating project discount rates despite the empirical fact that Beta doesn't work. It's not just slightly wrong. It gets the *sign* of the covariance-return relationship wrong. Amazing. My point is that Greenwald runs counter this tendency. He cuts away the baloney, ignores the auxiliary, and solidifies the foundation of competitive analysis.*The second half of the book, which deals with strategic interaction, isn't vital. It feels like Greenwald threw it in because his publisher wanted a longer book.

I am always reading, I am 33 years old, and this book has been the most important business book I have ever read in my life. It provides a straightfoward framework to analyse and understand the quality of a business, the existence of barriers to entry and the sustainability of these barriers (when identified that barriers currently exist).

A must read for business strategy and investing.

My two key takeaways from reading Greenwald's well-argued and counterintuitive premise are:1. There are but a few fundamental sources of competitive advantage2. Most companies can tap these sources at a local level (not a national or international level)These show that the front-line manager - the regional coordinator of retail chain or the country manager of service firm - has the power (and the obligation) to pursue local competitive advantages. Greenwald provides a simple, intuitive method for helping such "front-line strategists" seek out a competitive edge.I recommend this highly for anyone who aspires to be a strategist.

Great read

The book provides a simple, clear and practical framework for industry analysis.

This is the best book on marketing I have ever read. It completely broadens one's thinking beyond the basics of brand recognition and product advertising. With numerous case studies ranging from the PC industry to the creation of CDs to Rupert Murdoch's decision to Create the Fox Television Network, the book presents thorough leasons in business alchemy in a highly readable fashion.

Overall a great book. I would've enjoyed a section of insights on when to exit an unprofitable business line versus attempt to operate at a higher level of efficiency. If anyone has suggestions please post

I'm a big fan of the .hack franchise, and this book (along with the "Legend of the Twilight" series) were among my least favorite, perhaps because they targeted a much younger audience. Big fans will still want it because it includes a description of "The One Sin," an event frequently referred to elsewhere in the series; and if you're younger, it's not a bad starting point to get into the franchise.Casual fans might want to skip this, though, and go straight for the second "AI Buster" book, which is a collection of short stories. (This is a single long story.)Note that this is NOT manga, it is a text story.

Great read if you love the .Hack// series.

well when i bought this i was expecting a manga but i got a novel a bit of downer yet i enjoy it very much!

Another great purchase. Goes well with the other purchase I made. Easy to read and has great potential for those who love it.

This novel is a prequel to the .hack anime, games, and manga. It is set shortly before the anime, Sign, and tells the story of Albireo, a player in very popular online role-playing game The World, and the mysterious AI girl he encounters in a dungeon.Albireo is a solo adventurer in The World -- he is proud to have gotten his character to a high level playing on his own. One day while playing the game, he encounters a silent little girl in red, Lycoris, who is a NPC (non-player character, or AI). Meeting her activates an event that he is determined to finish. Shortly after, he runs into an annoying newbie player, Hokuto, who knows nothing about the right way to play the game. Alibreo is desperate to get rid of Hokuto, but she blackmails him into playing with her. So Albireo is forced to try to complete the Lycoris event with annoying Hokuto following him around. Along the way he uncovers some surprising truths about how The World really works. As a fan of the other .hack stories (the games, animes, and manga), I was very glad to see this novel translated into English. It gives a more detailed backstory for the creation of The World and helps set the scene for the events that take place in the later stories. I'd highly recommend this novel to all .hack fans, and if you're new to The World, this is a great book to start with.

The .Hack franchise absorbs the novel format, as well as Manga, anime and video games. The books are very short, but concise and interesting. The stories can be found elsewhere on Amazon, so I'll skip to the review:The writing is fairly standard for young adult audiences, clear and fast-moving and not too complex. Those who play MMORPGs a lot might get fractionally frustrated with the constant explanation of gaming terms and phrases, but they don't get in the way or slow the story down too much - the flipside is it means those who have never played MMORPGs can enjoy the .Hack franchise thoroughly without getting lost.I'd recommend the books to any fan of the anime series, or as a great starting point for young adults hoping to the wonderful .Hack universe and its absorbing, philosophical realms.

Well...unlike the other person, I actually had read the book. I'm both a .hack//fan, anime fan and gamer fan so...this book seemed to suit me.For all who are .hack//fans, this book takes place before .hack//sign and the games, this is during the time when Orca and Balmung were not that well known, but it's also the time when they became the legends they are in the series that are out. It's got a few other characters as well, a new one never seen else where, Albireo, who is also the main character, and Hokuto, another main character. Albireo, is a very experience player, he was in during the beta verison of the game, Fragment. He is a very high level, and might even to be considered as high as or a little higher then Orca and Balmung. He usually solos areas and got very strong that way. Hokuto, is a newbie to the world. With only a weeks worth of experience, she makes a lot of mistakes through out the story. She is also to be considered to be around junior-high or high-school because of her obnoxious attitude. She is a very fun character to read however, and many of the interactions with her and Albireo give a good laugh. They also come across a small little girl, not to be confused with Aura, she is described and in some of the pictures, looks a lot like her, but one thing sets them apart is both her name, Lycoris and her red dress. Lycoris, is a varient AI, and needed Albireo's help to find the items she scattered, to hide from someone. This is probably one of the best reading material, for people who are new to .hack or mmorpgs. There is a lot of explanation in it, from NPCs to how the world is played. But, it still has the same .hack action that is loved by all fans.I enjoyed this book a lot, and couldn't let it down till I finished. I would recommend this to any .hack//fan (this has a lot of answers to a couple of questions, scattered throughout the series, but it also provides new questions to ponder), any RPG fan (it's pretty fun, I thought to read a book about a fantasy mmorpg.), anyone who has not seen any .hack or has seen a few episodes/played the game a couple of times (tons of explanation, terms and that, that can help you understand what's going on in the .hack series), any fan of an anime with both comedy and action (this is so much like a manga, but with a lot more explanation to it and less pictures....but there still are a couple of very nice pictures in it) and to anyone who wants to read a very good fantasy novel. This is also a nice novel to see what an mmorpg is really like. Albiero explains a lot of stuff relating to mmorpgs, seeming that not all fans are hardcore players. So, pick it up if your intrested in games, .hack, or anime. Very nice book, and quite addicting once you get close into it.I'm very eager to see the next one as well.

This story...is one that brings me to tears every time I read it. Chronologically it is the first story in the .hack Timeline, and as such several elements in it are not seen in the main games and Sign.however, it's event shave greater connotations for the franchise as a whole, and if you are at all interested in .hack and it's greater franchise mythos, it is not one to miss.

This is a very devotional book which will satisfy the devotional yearning of anyone, regardless of the religious background. My heart melts with devotion and love from just reading one or two pages, and it takes away my mental delusions, worries, and anxieties. I consider myself spiritual but not religious, and I'm familiar with Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and with many of the works mentioned in Aldous Huxley's Perennial Philosophy. Sukhmani Sahib is simple yet profound. It is meant to go straight into your subconscious mind. Its truths are universal, and anyone who is truly spiritually-inclined will find a treasure in this book. I recommend it to everyone, especially those of a devotional nature (Bhakti Yoga).

I opened Alix and Nicky expecting a focus on the very great and undeniable love between the last Russian Tsar and his Empress. At first I was somewhat put off by the large amount of material on Russian political, social, and military developments during Nicholas II's reign and by the discussions of Russian Orthodox theology, but then I realized that all of that was linked to the imperial couple's great love story and that it all does, indeed, have a place in this book. Most people with an interest in Russian history are probably aware of the basic outline of Nicholas and Alexandra's love story: how the Russian tsarevich fell in love with Queen Victoria's shy granddaughter and eventually convinced her to change her religion and marry him, their adored family of four pretty girls and one hemophiliac boy, Alexandra (and to a lesser extent Nicholas)'s dependence on the corrupt holy man Gregory Rasputin, and their eventual overthrow and murder during the Russian Revolution. Its all been ably chronicled many times, most enduringly by Robert K. Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra. Virginia Rounding covers this material again, but with plenty of new and sometimes surprising information that challenges long held assumptions. For example, Nicholas may not have been the intellectual dullard he's usually made out to be, and he was far more resistant to Alexandra (and Rasputin)'s demands during World War I than popularly believed. For her part Alexandra loved Nicholas to the point of obsession, but her self absorption and focus on her own ailments meant her daughters were alternately neglected or emotionally controlled almost to the point of abuse, while her son was spoiled and pampered. The Tsar and Empress's strong Orthodox faith gave them enormous comfort, but also tended to enhance his fatalism and her determination to preserve Russian autocracy.I've read quite a bit about Nicholas II and his family over the years, but I was surprised by the amount of information I didn't know, chiefly in the form of anecdotes about the children, that is included in Alix and Nicky. This is particularly interesting since most of Rounding's sources are secondary and she apparently did no archival research. I was amused by the story of the Grand Duchesses' adventurous day out on their own on the Isle of Wight in 1909, and I was intrigued by the frightening vision of a "horrible man" Maria and Anastasia suffered as small children. Unfortunately the Notes at the end are somewhat rudimentary, making it difficult to determine the sources of some of these stories. Perhaps the most interesting chapter is the last one, in which Rounding does a fine job analyzing the family's final days in the light of Orthodox spirituality, interspersed with quotes from the books of Amos and Obadiah, which Alexandra read the day before she and her family were murdered.

I think this biography is, above all, a psychological study into the characters of Alix and Nicky. In that respect, I think the book fares pretty well and does not disappoint. What I particularly like about this book is that it does not paint a rosy picture of the last tsars, but highlights both their strengths and weaknesses. I had rather mixed feelings regarding Nicky and Alix throughout the book, it appears their virtues were, in Nicky's case, his discipline, hard work, charm and love of the Christian faith, in Alix's case this latter virtue plus her unbending devotion to whatever she firmly believed to be the right thing. However, their weaknesses would be utterly disastrous for the fate of their reign (e.g. their inclination for mysticism and the psychic which would lead them to be fooled firstly by the charlatan Monsieur Philippe and secondly to be lead astray by the wicked Rasputin). Even at an early stage of the book you already get the impression of the main opinion regarding Nicky - as a charming man, but rather weak and (so the accusation went) indecisive as well. I was rather suprised at reading this, since no hard proof of these weaknesses is really presented till much later during WWI, when the tendency of Nicky to succumb to the mental bullying of Alix and/or Rasputin is made fairly apparent. All in all, I probably ended with a more negative view of the last tsars than I did of a positive one. Their failures to reign responsibly would lead to catastrophic events and unimaginable suffering for the Russian people. Having said that, it would be obviously foolish to lay all the blame for the failures of his reign on the Tsars' feet since a lot of the blame lay elsewhere - social inequalities, corruption and incompetency on the part of the ruling class being the main ones; however the book does not deal with these issues, so I would suggest the reader to consult other sources explaining these themes for further insight into Nicky's reign. I thought the book was pretty readable in the sense that the sentences have a natural flow and are not tedious to read, despite the advanced language employed by the author. Now as regards the aspects of the book that I did not like (and hence the three star rating):1. The book is, utterly inexplicably, not ordered in chronological order. The first chapter occurs as late as 1913 (!) merely five years before the Tsars' assassination. This seems utterly baffling if one considers that right at the beginning of the book are introduced characters and events which are only explained in further detail until considerably later in the book. Example: very early on Ania Vyrubova and Rasputin appear in the narrative before they have even been introduced. I had the good luck of having read a good number of pages at random sections throughout the book before I actually started from the beginning, so I had a pretty good idea who these characters were (well I suppose pretty much everyone knows about Rasputin). The next few chapters follow the same pattern, with no clear chronological progression (although each chapter does include a specific chronological range). I would strongly advise the reader to ignore the author's ordering of chapters and just follow the logical chronological progression.2. The book contains an unnecessary amount of lengthy extracts from Alix's letters. Alix's letters are extremely tedious to read because of her poor writing style, using disconnected sentences and employing a conversational style - occasionally it's even difficult to understand what she's trying to say. Some of her letters almost take up a full page, and only a very limited amount of that letter might contain useful and interesting information for the reader; the author could have just included short, relevant excerpts from her letters. This issue becomes particularly prominent in the last third of the book; at some points I was even wondering whether the author was merely trying to fill up pages in order to fulfill a required page count. In contrast, with Nicky's letters, the author does the logical thing of just including relevant excerpts, besides which Nicky' writing style is much more readable.3. The book contains too little information on some CRITICAL events of Nicky's reign, and too much information on things of little importance. Two events that proved fateful during Nicky's reign where the Russo-Japanese war of 1905 and obviously, WWI. No information is provided on the reasons for Russia's involvement in the former war, of Nicky's attitude to the progression of the war or of his reaction to the naval disaster at Tsuchima. Worse, the only information provided to the outbreak of WWI is that Austria presented an unacceptable ultimatum to Serbia and a few sentences later we find that Germany declared war on Russia. How all this came about is left to the reader's imagination; important information on the thoughts of top generals, the war and foreign ministers regarding the possibility of war is left out (there was a general consensus that Russia was not yet ready militarily to face a war, nor was there any desire among the ministers and Nicky to start a war, as fate would have it, Russia ended up getting involved anyway). The author could surely at least have included the manifesto on the declaration of war, detailing the reasons for joining the war (for the defense of a fellow Slav nation - Serbia - and "to safeguard the honor, dignity, and integrity of Russia, and her position among the Great Powers". I believe including in greater detail the reasons for Russia's involvement in both of the aforementioned wars would have helped to better understand Nicky as a person, his beliefs and attitudes, he who was after all very much at the center and a main player in all of these events. In contrast to the sparse amount of information given on these important events, there is included some information that seems superfluous and trivial considering the length of the book (it might be OK for a 1000 page biography). e.g. relating in detail the fate of the Alexander palace or of a ball in 17th century costume attended by the Romanov dynasty. All in all, despite the above weaknesses I still rather enjoyed reading the book, and although it may not be the best book out there (certainly better than a good number of other biographies of the last Romanovs) I would still recommended it to other people. Reading or watching documentaries on the topics mentioned above would probably help the reader in better understanding the background and signficance of the events played out during Nicky and Alix's reign.

Jolene SingleterrryI found this book very detailed as it is based on first and secondary sources. Comparing it to Last of the Romanovs, I found it more detailed into the life of Alexei who never got to be czar. It also commented on the strange lack of reaction to the deaths of the Romanovs by the British royal family. George V and Czar Nicholas looked like twins after all.The strange hold of Ania Vyrubova, a protegee of the infamous Rasputin is also explored. She was not a relative and more like a lady in waiting who the royal family allowed to infringe in their lives and on their lives.Again comparing the Last of the Romanovs, there is no mention of the violation of the royal bodies after their deaths as there is in the former book. I find this omission unexplainable after all the other detailed minutia in the book. Is the author somehow schemish on this subject?Nevertheless, this book was an enormous amount of work to pull together all these sources that were gathered , examined and verified. One truly feels that the Romanovs were doomed by history and timing and the mystery of why the entire family was wiped out is a surely shameful commentary on the Russian revolution.Worth reading.

About half way through reading it. I've read several books on Nicholas and Alexandra and this book provides new information and tells old stories in a new way. I'm really enjoying it, but it might not be a good book for first time exposure to this story. For that I would recommend Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert Massie.

Praise for The Very Impatient Caterpillar, by Ross Burach:* "Chunky characters, livid green and thickly outlined for easy group sharing, and speech-bubble dialogue make this a good choice for read aloud[s] with a histrionic bent... There's definitely some science lurking here among the laughs, and preschool and primary classrooms can jumpstart the life cycle units with this super-charged title." --The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, starred review"Will delight fans of Mo Willems's "Pigeon" series... absolutely charming." --School Library Journal"Burach chronicles this miracle of nature in cartoon scenes as loud as the rapid patter... It won't be just adults chuckling at the interactions between the title character and its patiently pupating companions." --Kirkus Reviews"Burach's mixed-media digital artwork makes good use of the cartoon style to depict vibrantly colored caterpillars and the protagonist's overwrought emotions. Particularly humorous are the spot drawings showing the inside of the chrysalis, in which he rails against the measured pace of nature... a good choice for science edutainment." --BooklistPraise for Truck Full of Ducks, by Ross Burach:"Burach will have readers quacking up, both with the frequent repetition of the title -- 'Did you call for a truck full of ducks?' is a funny line no matter how often it's read or heard -- and over the illustrations... Sight gags and side comments in the pictures add further yuks to this ducky delight." -- Booklist"Children will delight in the extreme silliness of this story and will repeatedly pore over the detailed, colorful, and quirky illustrations." -- School Library Journal"Burach tells his story entirely through dialogue, packing it -- and his exuberant, crayon-like digital illustrations -- with visual jokes [and] an abundance of funny details to discover in each scene." -- Publishers Weekly"Silly details decorate every spread... Storytime audiences will quack up." -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for Billy Bloo Is Stuck in Goo, illustrated by Ross Burach:2018 CBC Children's Choice Book Awards Finalist"Begs to be read aloud... Gleeful, errant nonsense." -- Kirkus Reviews"Plenty to linger (and laugh) over." -- Publishers Weekly"Lots of giggles and goo, and weird characters too, in this rhyming cumulative storytime read-aloud, make this title a must-have for picture book collections." -- School Library Journal

My 4 year old loves this story!

Love, love, love this book! It has amazing illustrations, great story line, and great concepts covered. Like, metamorphosis, patience, migration, just to name a few. You have got to add this book to your library!

Funny! Great story! Good lesson for kids! This has become a favorite for both of my children.

My 5 year old loves this one! She clearly identifies with the impatient caterpillar. My husband sounds like he is having just as much fun reading to to her as she has listening to it.

Cute and funny. Would be a great read-aloud.
