Rick Steves' books are ideal for independent travelers on a budget who want to get the most out of their time & money. This book is for anyone who wants to experience the culture, history, & modern fun of France. The accomodation & food tips are step up from the grungy backpacker fare that the Let's Go series recommends, yet still modestly priced. Rick hits all the major tourist sites, but also shows you cozy, local spots where you can relax & really get into the country. I recently used this book & his more in-depth Paris book for 2 weeks in France & found the books to be an ideal tour guide. I've used his other books for European trips, & I'm never disappointed.

This would have been a great book, if the entire section on Holland wasn't missing. The seller was indifferent to my plight and wouldn't stand behind what he sold

This was our 2nd time using a Rick Steve's book (the first was the Italy guide book, which was great)...and I found the France guidebook lacking depth. He touches large portions of the country with the guidebook, but the regions we visited (Provence, Alps, and Paris) were void of much detail. In particular, we found the sight-seeing recommendations to be quite skimpy. The restaurant and hotel recommendations were ok, but we found our favorite hotels on-line or in a different guidebook. If you get this book, be sure to only use it as a companion to a more comprenesive guide, such as Lonely Planet or Fodor's!!

This is an exceptionally poor resource if you are passionate about history. A sop to the revisionist community, the author makes himself appear foolish by inserting at every opportunity a disparaging editorial aside, or similarly meaningless commentators remark from the past, to establish his sensibilities about what transpired. Apparently, he has not heard that the best histories present the facts, not the author's aspirations for approval by a peer group through politically correct commentary.If you are looking for detailed discussion and analysis of insurgent tactics and strategies throughout history, look elsewhere. I really wanted to like this book, but, it is not a credible resource, rather it is entertainment.

I am on the fence about this book. If you are a novice, i highly recommend it. if you are advanced in your understanding of insurgency, then this is a potential desk reference and quick guide. Other books such as Robert B Asprey, War in the Shadows, Vo I and II; and Ian F.W. Beckett, Modern Insurgencies and Counter-insurgencies offer as good, if not better look at the use of terror and guerrila war.

I liked the comparison of insurgencies from ancient to modern times because the similarities are so strong. Principles are exposed by this sweeping review of the history of insurgency and lessons become obvious for our present day. So frustrating that the lessons seem to escape leaders due to their ignorance and in some cases their refusal to listen to those who understand the history and perils of such warfare. So many examples of stupidity and willful refusal to learn these lessons from both the sides of such wars. Like the poor it seems we will always have insurgency to deal with even though the means to avoid such evils are evident to anyone who knows the history of such things. Read it and weep!

Reading this book I relived the history lessons of high school and all following history books I ever read. Never ever have I met such an incredible all encompassing story to see all and understand most: full of new and astonishing facts, explanations and cleverly worded conclusions. I rate this book top of the class not only for the immense time and work that went into its making but for its completeness.

It's hard to judge the merits of this book. You won't become an expert on any particular wars that Boot describes and if you're reading critically you won't be entirely convinced of his conclusions about general rules of success and failure in fighting guerillas. How could you, when each individual description is so brief? Are these fair conclusions from Boot's more in-depth reading, or is he presenting the evidence in such a way as to bolster his thesis?I don't know. But I am glad to have been exposed to the ideas and provided with references to read more deeply. Recommended to lay readers who want a broad exposure, but don't assume Boot is telling you everything you need to know.

A mile broad and ten feet deep. Maybe that's inevitable with the breadth attempted, but it's hard to demonstrate anything but truisms when discussing literally scores of insurgencies over thousands of years. Nonetheless, there are some interesting points (notably pointing out the false dichotomy between Clausewitzian war and "Eastern" war, given that Chinese and Indian traditional war was in large formations); along with a half-hearted and unconvincing attempt to extend that observation to undercut Victor Davis Hanson's theses on the Western way of war). Also a fascinating database of insurgencies and a statistical analysis of their success over time. Also lots of interesting anecdotes. So worth reading, but perhaps not worth pondering beyond that.

What I said up there. If you can't make these surveys simpler for old people you will have to live with young, inexperienced opinions.

In high school and college world history we were spoon fed what I consider pure garbage. Boot's book gives an unvarnished look at the subject.Sincerely,Bill Warnock

I had to wait to wipe the tears just now. Please read this book and then look at how much talent was lost to the world because of that HORRIBLE thing known as WW2. It was so senseless.

There were several books to choose from and not knowing the differences, I chose this one although I did read the reviews as well. Since then I have ordered one of the other books, i.e. Eva's Story, which I have since learned is more of an accurate account of the atrocities that happened during captivity, although I have not yet read it. The Promise was good but apparently written more for children.

Great book

I read this book before I saw the play, which just premiered last weekend. I also had the honor to meet Eva Schloss herself at that time. It is a very moving book which brings to life the horrific experiences of a young girl during the Holocaust. I had never heard of this stepsister of Anne Frank's before which made it extra special. If you found reading Anne Frank's diary moving, you will also "enjoy" reading this book. It is a very easy but powerful read. I recommend this book highly.

This book gave me more details on Eva's brother's artwork and his natural abilities. It also showed this family determination to live on through future generations.

A really good book, but really a kids book. This is a bit of a toned down version of the authors first book Eva's Story. I wish I had known what type of book it was before I bought it, but it was still a good read.

This is a very moving account of strength and enduring love for a son who did not survive the cruelties of both the SS and fellow Jewish prisoners, who became what they had to in order to increase their own chances for survival. They surely be forgiven and not be judged harshly in view of their own circumstances during the Holocaust.

Not as graphic as Eva's storyIt is appropriate for upper elementary and middle school students
