This is a detailed account of what it was like to be a young actor/actress in the 1970's. Mary certainly learned a lot from Will Geer (he ran a theater group), and mostly enjoyed her time on the series. Will was always of good cheer, and he enjoyed being with the kids - even after the camera stopped rolling - he'd tell humorous stories and asides (or teach the kids about plants - he would sometimes egg them on, "Try this, you'll get HIGH").Will Geer - Quite a CharacterSo he was kind of funny, and caring. When the child actors hung around him, they learned a lot - about life, botany/plants, and being a professional - really about how to "Live life to the fullest".Then there was Grandma - Ellen Corby. She was so professional .. and served as "script girl" [she had done this for many years, prior to being on the Waltons show]. Ellen helped the kids with their lines, and other things [when they had to re-shoot a scene, she'd help them "put their hair & attitude back to where they left off at.." ]. This was for consistencyMary talks about what it was like to shoot the special (B-4 the series began) - and how much fun she had. She talks about her family too, & how they'd tease her abt the show [her character, Erin]. That's pretty funny. (also she touched on her friendship w/ Michael Learned).It runs a bit long, at times - such as her crusade about "Body Image" (women's obsession to change their breast appearance) - yet that's a Subject which needed some light shed on it ! (You can just skip that section if u don't wish to read it)So I mostly enjoyed Mary's reflections, and finding out what she liked to do during her spare time. Her good friends from the show - one of them is the actor who plays Jason, on the show. Read the Kindle book to discover the others!P.S. Elizabeth is touched on in this book, as well as John-Boy (Richard Thomas)
I have read this book 3 times, and it seems to improve with every read. About 60% or so deals with her time on the Waltons, and after that, her horrendous ordeal with implants, and lupis. Mary is truly a top notch writer, who keeps you interested, inspired, entertained, etc with every written line in her book. The Waltons was a fave tv show of mine when it originally aired in the 1970's, and via the box set of the series my angel lady gave me for Christmas, I can enjoy it again whenever i wish. I can not express my warm feelings about this marvelous book of hers good enough, quite frankly. HIGHLY recommended.
I loved this book, read it in just two days.As a big fan of the Waltons (I still watch re-runs) I bought the book originally expecting a behind the scenes look at the Waltons, and did. But so much more.First of all I have to say how Very, very, Very nice Mary Beth came across throughout the entire book. When she told stories that were unpleasant, she took care to only describe the incident, but not out, accuse, or belittle the offender. There were many times she was wronged as a woman and a human and she has handled those wrongs in the book with the utmost class.Hearing about all the cast of the Waltons was so wonderful, to see that the people I loved on screen were the same great people off screen. I admit to knowing and loving these actors, including Mary Beth and even when I see them somewhere else they will always be Erin, John Boy or Olivia. When Ralph Wait was on Days of Our Lives, even as Father Matt, he was still John Walton.The more touching was when Mary told of her struggles, I felt for her, and vowed that I would not let my daughter, who is currently 10, be in the dark. She has a right to her voice, and a right to say no. She has a right to her own body, and a right to make informed decisions about it.I bless Mary Beth for this book, for her work, and for her continued role as a caregiver to everyone.
McDonough has a wonderful ability to draw you into her story of playing a game of hide and seek with the multiple dimensions of herself. From her life at home to her adventures as a child star growing up on TV's Walton's; as an adult struggling to find her unscripted way through love and marriage, motherhood and parenting, as she carefully learns to balance between trusting herself and others who have always been portrayed as the ones who should never be doubted or questioned. McDonough takes you on a path that will lead you up the steep and sometimes rocky side of Walton's Mountain back down to the valleys of unknowns only to finally reach a plateau of acceptance and a better understanding of living a life of peace requires the occasional dips, twists, and turns to remind you who you truly are.
